About Cochiti Campground

Cochiti Recreation Area is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation. The lake offers two public recreation areas: Cochiti on the west side of the lake and Tetilla Peak on the east side. Both sides offer spectacular scenic views of the water and surrounding mountains. The Cochiti Dam is one of the ten largest earth-fill dams in the United States, and also one of the largest in the world. The lake derives its name from the Indian Pueblo on the Cochiti Reservation.

The directions you get when clicking the link on the site do not take you to the campground. They take you to the reservation about 3 miles down the road. Judging from the reaction we got when we approached the gate, this is common. We arrived a little earlier than the 1400 checkin. There was a camper still set up in our site and didn’t look like they were ready to move. There was not an attendant at the office nor a camp host, so we approached the camper. They said it was first come first served when they got there even though our name was on the site post as being reserved. We ended up moving to another site as we had a long drive the next day and just wanted to get some rest.

There are no amenities close by except a gas station just outside the campground. They do have some food and necessities but it’ll cost ya.

The campground itself was nice, quite, and clean. The electricity and water worked and there is a dump station as you exit. There are not any lights in the campground so it gets dark. The walk to the comfort station is eerie after dark.

Beautiful area. We were using this as a base camp to explore Santa Fe and Los Alamos for spring break. We hit a cold stretch, so mostly in the camper when at the park. Overall a great stay, strong Verizon signal when we needed to check in w work, kids wanted to watch a show. Would be a great place a little later in the season, bit we were happy it wasn’t packed with campers.

Only downsides:

Our site had a little bit of a lean to it and we couldn’t get perfectly level, but close enough.

Had electricity, but no sewer line. Looked like some sites had it and some didn’t.

The water spigot was spraying toward the electric hook up, so that was a little sketchy once I noticed and just turned off the power when filling, seems like it may have froze and split so we couldn’t get a no leak connection, and just filled our fresh tank instead of remaining hooked up. Easy fix.

Random dog poops all over, but that’s everywhere. I’m a dog owner and clean up after mine for this very reason. I hit a couple landmines and had to wash shoes.

Beautiful campground. Lots of room between sites. Incredible views of lake and mountains from our site. We were in 57. Level back-in site. Overnight only. Would love to spend a week here. Can’t beat the senior rate of $10 a night.
