About Wild Rivers Recreation Area

The Wild Rivers Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River and Red River Wild and Scenic River. Here visitors may experience the beauty of an 800-foot deep canyon sliced into volcanic flows by the Rio Grande (Spanish for Large River) and Red River where they come together.Located in the high plains of northern New Mexico, this area is rich with history, rugged beauty, and enticing recreational opportunities. A back country byway, visitor center, campgrounds, picnic facilities, and trails are available for visitors. Several spectacular overlooks are found here, including La Junta Point, one of the most dramatic views in the state, overlooking the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande -- and it is wheelchair accessible. The canyon ecosystem descends 800 feet from rim to river, creating a unique diversity in plant and animal life. Ancient pinon and juniper forests include 500 year-old trees. Watchable wildlife opportunities include mule deer, big horn sheep, elk, red-tailed hawk, and mountain blue-bird. The climate is semi-arid with summer thunderstorms common in July and August, and snow possible from November through March. Summer temperatures range from 45 to 90F and in winter from -15 to 45F.

Beautiful location. Limited services ("no water available") first time visiting so no idea why or what is going on with water. We were in the area for a youth hunt and spent more time here in the general area than we intended.

The pleasant and knowledgeable staff made this an easy Win. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to return for on a second trip a few days later.

Helpful staff. Restrooms closed. Road into this area closed to 1 way traffic with a stop light and piolet car at 5 mph to take you all the way to the visitors center adding 30 min to the visit. However the views at the La Junta campground and trail head were wonderful. There is a bike lane that follows the 1 way loop drive from the visitor center to La Junta campground and look out. We saw Lots of bikers riding this loop and one told us he’s been coming for years. Very sunny and hot the day we visited in mid September. Recommend hat, water, sunscreen. The La Junta trail has been closed for 3 years or so. Overall kind of disappointing, thus the 2 star review.

Camped here for a night, hiked down to the river and watched an amazing sunset over the canyon. The lady who helped us in the visitor center was super helpful in our decision which camp site to pick.

As others have stated, Wild Rivers BLM is definitely off the beaten path. However, its easy to get here down a main paved highway. The roads in the park are paved. The campsite loops are gravel/unpaved but ok. We travel in a 38 Renegade Valencia. We found only a few sites that could easily handle our size. (No tow vehicle). Site 27 in El Auguaje was long enough for even a tow vehicle. Trees are an obstacle backing in. Park time was 10 minutes max. A little maneuvering. Its worth the drive and the maneuvering for the campground & the views. The campgrounds are connected by a nice, one way paved road loop with a bicycle path. My wife loves to e-bike so this is perfect. Each site has a gazebo with a metal roof & picnic table. No electricity. No dump. Water is available at the toilets. This is boondocking at its best.

AT&T was 20mbs. Great! We camped at El Aguaje Campground in a 38’ Super C.
