The Lake Campground offers a fun, family-friendly atmosphere with engaging kids' club events, mini golf, playgrounds, and a pizza delivery service to campsites. While some facilities are outdated and there were issues with management and amenities, many guests appreciated the spacious sites and the welcoming nature of long-term residents. Overall, the campground has potential but may not meet expectations based on online representations.

★☆☆☆☆ Disappointing Experience – Misrepresented and Poorly Managed
We are full-time campers, traveling across the country and recently stayed at The Lake Campground in Ohio while visiting family near the Portage Lakes area. This was one of the few places nearby, and the website made it look perfect — a 6-acre lake with floating docks, slides, basketball hoops, concessions for ice cream and pizza, pavilions with picnic areas, and outdoor grills. It seemed ideal for family gatherings.
We booked online for three weeks, adding firewood and ice to our order, and paid $897 for what was advertised as a full hook-up site. Unfortunately, what we found was nothing like what was represented online.
Despite calling multiple times before arrival, no one ever answered or returned our calls about check-in procedures. When we arrived early afternoon, no staff were at the gate, which we couldn’t drive through with our 50-foot rig. Eventually, a resident from the home on the property helped us locate someone named Paul, who informed us there were no full hookups—only water and electric, with no sewer.
The public restrooms were dark, smelly pit toilets, and the showers required quarters for cold water. The facilities were outdated and unpleasant. The scenery was initially lovely, but it quickly became apparent that the lake had been drained. What remained was muddy, smelly swamp water with broken floating docks, rusty slides, and dilapidated lifeguard stands. The “concession stands” were closed, picnic tables were stacked inside pavilions, and the outdoor grills were completely rusted out.
Throughout our stay, the permanent residents were friendly and welcoming, but the management was unresponsive and rude. When we requested weekly tank pumping after 5 PM (since we work remotely), Paul showed up at 3 PM, one time disconnecting our power—cutting our Starlink internet during meetings—and was extremely rude when my husband reminded him of our agreed time. We later discovered he never pumped our black tank at all, despite charging us for it AND we tipped him!
To top it off, the property gate is extremely narrow, and when we tried to drive around it, despite Paul advising us that we could, someone from the on-site house screamed at us. Later in our stay, while walking around the campground and pavilions, the house resident’s two loose dogs ran at us . One in front of us and one behind. I had to stomp and yell at them to keep them away from me and our dog.
All in all, this campground is severely misrepresented online, poorly maintained, and unprofessionally managed. The only redeeming quality was the kindness of some long-term residents. If you’re considering staying here, look elsewhere—the photos and descriptions are misleading, and the experience is not worth the price or frustration. I have pictures of what it actually looks like so you can compare to the website for yourselves.

Overall a mixed experience. The sites are nice and wide. The lake was a blast for the kids even though rain kicked up a lot of algae.
The pet restrictions made it hard to enjoy camping with the dogs. Also, having to pay a quarter to use the shower was an unexpected frustration. Not sure why I had to pay for basic amenities after already paying the site fee.
The grounds are kept up pretty well even if some of the equipment is looking dated.

We stayed here 9/6 and 9/7/2023. This park caters to seasonal renters, but saves a few spots for travelers staying just a few nights. It's geared to families and was almost deserted after Labor Day. Lots of empty trailers without occupants. The park is older and needs updating. The bathrooms have vault toilets and the shower is very primitive. Everything else was locked up and shut down. For $60 a night, we expected better facilities. Our site had trash and there was trash around the bathouse. I'm sure this is a fun place for kids in the summer, but it wasn't our cup of tea.

My wife and I are members at the Lake Campground, and we have 5 children that just love it. I think the owners do a great job at making it safe and fun for all. Thank you Kris and Amy for holding people accountable for their actions, It makes for a nice peaceful place for my family.
