Doris Campground

Well spaced, wooded campsite with peek-a-boo view of lake a short walk away. There is a narrow trail that lets you walk along the lakeside. Cement picnic table, fire ring and raised grill. Site 47 is not particularly level and took a couple times to find best spot for levelling. No water at campsite and water hydrants are not conveniently located. No cell, no wifi, 15 OTA TV. There was Tornado Watch our second night and without mobile service we had to watch TV for updates. Showerhouse is the only tornado shelter. You can occasionally hear thumping of artillery fire from nearby Fort Sill but it is distant. It was amazing to see bison and longhorn cattle everywhere we went. We saw dozens of bison and lots of longhorn cattle (even a big bull by the campground showerhouse). Make sure you go to the Visitor Center, which has a good museum and gift shop. We got excellent trail advice from volunteer at the front desk. The trail maps and signage is not good so it was really helpful to have someone explain what we needed to do. We really enjoyed hike to Crab Eyes balancing rock formation, from Sunset trailhead past pit toilets follow Charon Gardens wilderness area you will eventually come to sign that shows Crab Eyes direction (versus Treasure Lake). There were climbers rappelling on the rock face when we got to Crab Eyes. We also enjoyed short hike to beautiful overlook of Post Oak Lake and boulder field, from Treasure Lake trailhead take short path past Cedar tree out onto rocks. We enjoyed spiral drive up Mt Scott for long views. Check times - gate opens at noon on weekends and people were lined up on the side of the road waiting

We love this park for its beauty and for the bison, longhorn cattle, elk, wild turkey etc. the campground is good. Lots of trees for shade and shelter. Very little cell service but you can get a Verizon at the shower house (barely) or on a hike up little baldy!

Great location to explore the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and Fort Sill. Sites are paved and fairly level, but narrow. Sites are really spread out nicely. Electric at some sites; most sites are non-electric, so watch your choice. Fresh water at spigots were located near the pit toilets or group campgrounds. Potable water spigot at the dump station was locked. Showers and bathrooms were great although there is only one bath house for the entire campground and got a little busy at peak times. Lots of hiking choices in the refuge. Visit nearby Meers for a huge burger and Medicine Park for a variety of shops and restaurants.

We enjoyed our stay at Doris Campground. Our site was clean and we saw lots of wild turkeys. The nearby composting toilets were clean.
