About Willow Prairie Horsecamp

Willow Prairie Horse Camp is nestled in tall timber at an elevation of 4,400 feet just southwest of Mt. Mc Loughlin, near a beautiful meadow. The camp was converted to a horse camp in 1990 with the addition of 19 miles of interconnecting horseback riding trails. The renovation was made possible through a partnership between the Forest Service and the Coalition of Equestrian Clubs, which provided much of the labor for this wonderful facility.

What Guests Are Saying

Willow Prairie Horsecamp is highly praised for its cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, and attentive camp host, Dawn Cavanaugh. Reviewers appreciate the spacious campsites, excellent water troughs, and a variety of enjoyable trails that start right from the camp. While some minor improvements were noted regarding site leveling and safety of corrals, the overall experience is described as fantastic, peaceful, and supportive of equestrian activities.

Nice place. We had site 10 which was great for seclusion and access to water troughs. There is just 1 vault toilet with no sinks. Hosts were full of info. The trails weren’t marked the best for navigating and the maps were awful.

The campground and trails are great. The camp hosts, Russ and Nellie are horrible. They kept coming into my campsite to talk and then Russ ended up being bossy and rude. They made my stay there unpleasant. I understand that they probably have to deal with a lot of unruly aholes but I'm not one. Don't treat me like one! They do work hard trying to keep the sites and grounds clean but their personalities are harsh and downright rude. I was there by myself, my friend had the site next to me and we happened to be right across from the hosts site. I recommend staying in sites 5-10. USFS needs to get new hosts for this location, Russ and Nellie are just a bad fit. They don't like horse people. Just to emphasize, Russ told me to load all my horse poop into my trailer and take it home with me! I asked him if he was kidding, nope! He's crazy! BTW, I was quiet and kept my site clean and left my horse poop in the manure wagon.

Willow Prairie Horse Camp has the cleanest campsites around! Russ and Nellie work hard to keep them clean and nice, even the stock tanks are very clean. The trails are marked much better this year than past years and you can use Maprika to find your way around. Lots of different trails to ride for all levels of horses and riders. Looking forward to returning soon!
