after driving to Johnday to get food we discovered that the frig. wasn't working, I called lori or lisa, who ever was in charge of the rentals in Prairie City I think and was advised that there was nothing they could do. I was advised that I would have to rough it or go back to town and buy a ice chest and Ice. I asked if they could bring up a ice chest and was told it was my problem. I called the ranger and was told that he didn't have time to deal with me and the soonest he could get some one up to help me was thursday and this is a monday. F.A.A showes up on Thursday and red tags the fire tower with a metal sign that says do not climb. I discovered the problem with the refer and fixed it. This was our 3 time visiting the tower and our last time. Such poor customer service, budget cuts. They don't do the regular maintenance that they used to do. Twice while we were there 2 forest service fire trucks came and parked at the base of the towers and parked and slept at the base of the towers. What a poor use of the budget, if there was not fires to fight they should of been put to use doing something else productive to do,

The road was no problem at all for my Subaru Outback, the lookout was clean and everything worked, the views were amazing, and a mountain goat wandered up. It was a wonderful experience!!

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, staying at fall mountain lookout tower. The lightning storms were amazing. I am very pleased I got the chance to stay there. Hopefully someday I might be back.

The description is really detailed, not many tips to add: bring water and bedding, electricity and bed is provided :) There is heating that woks fine, but we took small heaters just in case (it was late October and pretty windy/cool day).
Great place to spend a night or two, would be great to be back one day!

Enjoyed our quick night in the lookout. Facility was very clean and this is lookout has electricity. Sunset was beautiful. We did have a lot of smoke coming up the valley from the fires which made the sunset really pink/red. Smoke moved out in the middle of the night so we did get some star gazing in. The road is very easy to drive up with no issues. We did have a few visitors driving up to look at the smoke coming in from fires but they stayed down by the cell towers. The picnic table and fire pit are down by the first set of cell towers. Excellent cell service in the lookout. Highly recommend this fire lookout.

Great views and easy to get to. Forest roads in relatively good condition. One of if not the only reservable lookouts in the state with built in electricity. There's a road along the ridge that offers an easy hike with additional viewpoints. You can see the lights in the distance from nearby towns Mt. Vernon and John Day at night. Views and hiking during the day, stargazing, movies and games at night. Only issue was the bugs outside, which weren't bad. Bring spray.

Cab is in nice shape given its age and the elements. Futon is showing signs of age. The views are outstanding and cab has operable windows on 2 sides for a cross breeze on hot days. Road is passable all the way to the top for nearly all vehicles (a bit of extra clearance recommended). An enjoyable time, overall.

It was my first time going to a fire lookout. It was amazing. It was very well-kept, had electricity, and very clean. The views are incredible. Breathtaking. There were a lot of mosquitoes in May. So we could stay only one night. Could not go for hikes or even stay downstairs. I hope to visit it again soon.
