Elkhorn Valley Recreation Site

This is a lovely, small and quiet campsite. We visited in late July and were very pleased with how warm the river was and how safe and pleasant it was to swim in. We were in site B10, which was not as private as I would have preferred, but it was very quiet as it was away from other sites. B12-16 were right above the river, but a little close together. The A sites did have one river access point and were fairly private and a little more foresty. This is a great spot for visiting the Opal Creek water slide. (By the way, if you have young kids, Opal Pool is maybe not worth the extra hike, but the slide area before you get to the pool is fantastic!)

What a beautiful place. We planned a family vacation to enjoy the river and site B17 (Sun -Mon). When we got there, two large groups of people had set up all day spots at the base of the trail from our site to the river. We hiked up to day use to hike down to the water. They continued to crowd us out. We are social distancing and it was stressful. They stayed until dark and all 9 of them and all their gear tracked right through the middle of our camp to get into their vehicle that was parked in one of the overnight camping parking spots. Monday morning was beautiful. We had a spot on the water right at the trail to our site. Lovely - only until 1 when we had to vacate for next campers. Glad for that time anyway.
The campground cannot make people do the right thing. I am posting this to let families know that the camp site area is over run by others at times. Don't count on having the water front area connected with your site to yourselves. Some folks driving fast through camp, watch your little ones.
Loved that the outhouse near camp sites B was cleaned well. Out house in other loop (where we ended up hiking to in order to get to the river) smelled so bad we could not use it, burned our lungs.

The biggest bummer were the people next to us awake and loud, laughing and smoking pot until 1:00 am. Other then that it was lovely.

I loved the whole time we were there. These are the kind of sites we make notes of for the next time we want to go camping. Our visit happened two weeks before the Beachie Creek fire, and I am saddened to think the campground may have been lost.
