About Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins

The Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins sit at an altitude of 3,200 feet near the Santiam Pass Winter Recreation Area of the Willamette National Forest. These cabins were built in 1924 and are rustic, historic wood structures that include a dispatcher's cabin, a springhouse shed, a garage/woodshed and a fire hose shelter. The commissary cabin and a supervisor's cabin, known as the Hall House, are available as rentals either separately or together. The compound was once used to house firefighters and corral horses. It is still used as a rest and resupply station by the Forest Service horse packer heading in and out of Wilderness areas. Guests must walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe approximately one mile to access the cabins from Lava Lake Sno-Park.

This cabin stay was super nice and cozy, but it is for the minimalist. Be sure to bring a head lamp or LED lantern. There are solar powered lights that are on a timer so you need to wear your headlamp around your neck when they go out while you are cooking :-) We found out that they last for about 3 hours of near continuous use on a cloudy and rainy weekend without much sun. The heater worked great and the bed was comfy albeit a tad soft for our liking. The kitchen has most of the basics, but suggest you bring what you need in the event something is missing.

Such a magically beautiful place to visit. We had the entire facility to ourselves and enjoyed it so much. The history there is important and we are glad to see it being so well maintained. Definitely added to our visit-again list!

Cabin was clean and well stocked. not enough snow to so we used a wagon to bring in our gear from the gate.

We will definitely be back! The cabin was clean and tidy. The solar power to run lightbulbs and sockets was a great bonus. We did not see or hear any mice as mentioned by prior guests. We did not use the oven because of prior comments but brought a cook top. It was beautiful and there is so much to see. We had a great time!

Peaceful cabin, so glad we visited for two nights. The gate was locked. We parked accross the street in the national forest. The road/trail past the gate was good enough that a wheeled cart we brought worked well to haul water and gear. One bed was comfortable, one bed (pull out mattress in couch) was not. We brought a sheet to put on the bed, and I’m glad we did because there were mouse droppings on it. A little chilly, but overall comfortable. It was fun poking around the dried lake bed, exploring the trails, and the historic structures. There was a fire ring not a lot of wood. No mice during our visit (we set traps). Lights worked all night but we had a lot of sun. Because grey water filled the toilet, I recommend using the other toilet further away (splash back is real).

Cabin looked excellent from the exterior, the setting is picturesque for sure. The trouble came with the lack of an access code for the lockbox containing the key to the cabin - should have come from Recreation.gov. I've stayed at many forest service cabins and never had a problem with codes (included in several preparatory emails). The absence of a code made me wonder if perhaps the reference to an access code was an error, but not so. Arrived after hours, growing dark and no option to contact the ranger district office. Admitted defeat on the doorstep and drove home.
Will try again, but be sure you have your entry code, and if it's not in the emails, call the ranger station before they close (4:30 PM)!

We enjoyed our stay and the quiet. Yes, you can hear the highway traffic in the distance, but it is not too distracting. In order to ski far, one would need to go to another sno park like Maxwell Butte, Little Nash, or Potato Hill. These cabins are great for reading, playing games, cooking, and relaxing. We could not get the solar lights to work in the Commissary Cabin, but our family members in the Hall House had them working.

Great spot for a snowshoeing adventure. Parked at Lava Lake Snow park, had a nice 1 mile snowshoe walk in on a well-marked trail with 2 ft of snow. No trouble getting in the cabin, no trouble with the gas fireplace. (The inside temp is still cool--like 59 degrees all evening and night-- so plan to being warm gear. Also, we did not use the stove due to warnings about mouse smell; we brought our own small stove to boil water. ) The historic site is well-maintained, with interesting signs about the history of the place. We met one of the caretakers and we really appreciate their work.

The cabin is beautiful and well taken care of and the lake is gorgeous. My reason for 3 stars is because it is TOTALLY infested with mice. Upon arrival we found mouse feces everywhere, on counters, in drawers, etc. We stashed food in the box provided and left cold food outside in a locked cooler. I highly recommend NOT using the oven. We did use it and were met wirh the most disgusting, burning chemical smell ever. Even after we turned off the oven we had to open all doors and windows and sit outside for hours while it aired out. And even then we had to sleep with the doors open. We almost left in the middle of the night because of it. Reading the previous journal entries we discovered that what we were smelling was burning mouse urine and feces. Gross!! I think the oven should just be removed or at least sealed shut. Mice ran all around the cabin all night as well. After inhaling burnt mouse droppings all night we were concerned we might get sick, but thankfully didn't. If the mouse problem wasn't a thing, this place would be great, but that ruined it for me and I will not be back unfortunately.
