About Cook Lake Rec Area

Situated in a heavily forested area adjacent to Cook Lake, this campground is a peaceful setting for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in the Black Hills National Forest in Wyoming. I'm not much for campground normally; I prefer dispersed camping away from people. However, this campground is very nice with good amenities. The best part is the 4+ mile hiking trail that starts right in the campground. There was the obligatory camper that ran a generator most of the day but other than that our stay was nice.

This site is very difficult to find and get to. Must travel about 20 miles on dirt roads with very few directional signs. Choose your own adventure because the signage was so bad. Better to travel in daylight to find the site due to the roads and abundant deer. We were tent camping and reserved a non-electric site but the site seemed set up for RVs as the only spot for a tent was right behind your car and down from a hill. Bathrooms were dirty with no TP and you had to walk through tall grass or another campsite to get to it. Many RVs with loud generators late into the night. You do not want to have to come and go from this site.
