Bandy Creek is a great campground and base to explore Big South Fork and Pickett State Park. The campground is well maintained and the staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. The geological formations are impressive and you can spend a good half day taking a train ride from Sterns, Ky to a coal mining town that the park maintains.

Bandy Creek is a great campground and base to explore Big South Fork and Pickett State Park. The campground is well maintained and the staff are all friendly and knowledgeable. The geological formations are impressive and you can spend a good half day taking a train ride from Sterns, Ky to a coal mining town that the park maintains.

The tent-only loop is completely separate from the generator-run behemoths, and because the park is a designated dark sky area, even the bathrooms have no annoying flood lights. (Although the full moon was so bright I did wake up in the middle of the night wondering who was shining a flashlight in my tent.) The bathrooms and campgrounds are clean, and the trails offer exquisite scenery. Just bring your bear spray!🐸

WE SELECTED A SITE ACROSS FROM THE BATHOUSE. SITE WAS PAVED AND PROVIDED ELECTRIC, WATER AND PICNIC TABLE. NOTICED THE CAMPGROUND HAD ALOT OF HORSE TRAILER/CAMPERS ... NOT SOMETHING WE ARE ACCUSTOM TO SEEING SINCE I THOUGHT EQUINE CAMPING WAS SEPARATE (NO HARM NO FOUL, JUST AN OBSERVATION FROM OUR EXPERIENCE) DID NOTICE THAT THERE WERE FOOTPATHS CUT THROUGH SEVERAL CAMPSITES LEADING TO THE BATHOUSE FROM THE UPPER TIERED LOOP...NOT A FAN OF "SHORT CUTS". BATHOUSE WAS LIT THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. BEAR BOXES ARE PROVIDED FOR FOOD AND TRASH. ALTHOUGH WE DID NOT HAVE TIME SINCE THIS WAS JUST A "STOP FOR THE NIGHT" SPOT, IT WOULD BE NICE FOR BICYCLING.

Bandy Creek Campground is accessible via US Highway 27, which is approximately 12 miles to the west. The campground is also within reach of Interstate 75, located roughly 25 miles to the east.

Arrival & departure
- Travelers should exercise caution on Highway 297 due to steep grades and curves; an alternate route is recommended for those uncomfortable with these conditions.

- Horse stall reservations are required and can be made by phone or online; they are separate from campground reservations.
