Dog Canyon Campground

This campground was completely full on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Hipcamp sites are looking better almost every time I stay in a National Park.

The location is beautiful with access to trails. However, the facilities for trailers are modest to say the least. There is a small parking area that backs to the horse corrals and their consequences. Somewhat aromatic and attracting insects. The space is shallow, so a tow vehicle stretches into the roadway. No privacy whatsoever between the sites, which feature a picnic table, but nothing more. I would call it 'parking' more than camping. All that said, I'm grateful to have access to Dog Canyon, even with it's limits.

We kept in our tent for six nights, two of which were pretty windy with temps down into the 30s. But our last two days were glorious, with high temps around 70. With clear skies, the stars were awe-inspiring, and on our last night, I even saw a shooting star. Mule deer and wild turkeys can almost always be seen there. The campground is very clean and generally well-maintained, though there is some kind of leak in the ladies' bathroom (there is a single toilet for men, and another for women) so that the floor is always a little wet, with mold forming between the floor tiles. They need to fix that. Only two long trails start at this campground, but we discovered that there are others at Sitting Bull Falls, about 30 miles to the north. The nearest ice is 60 miles away, with the store at Queen closed for renovation, so bring big chunks of ice in your excellent ice chest, if you want to stay very many days.

As always, the campground was meticulously maintained. Joe, the ranger on duty, was very friendly and helpful. We gave camped at Dog Canyon several times, and this was the first time that a ranger was onsite during our entire stay. I hope this continues.

it is about a 2 hour drive from this campground back to the other side of the park and the park headquarters. If you are planning to hike trails on the west/North side, this is a great park with no traffic and good restrooms.
