About South Skookum Lake

South Skookum Lake Campground is a beautiful campground situated next to South Skookum Lake. It is heavily forested and plenty of shade and seclusion from other campers. The lake is relatively small and is not suitable for boats exceeding 20 feet. The boat ramp is small and unimproved. Two docks, one of which is accessible, are located near the launch area and provide fishing opportunities. South Baldy lookout, which is still staffed during the summer months, is visible from the campground and is a popular day trip.

What Guests Are Saying

South Skookum Lake campground is praised for its friendly hosts, spacious and clean sites, and beautiful surroundings, making it a perfect spot for families and relaxation. The facilities, including well-maintained outhouses and bear-proof garbage cans, contribute to a pleasant camping experience, despite minor issues like noisy neighbors and some mosquitoes on the hiking trail. Overall, it's a well-kept gem that campers look forward to revisiting, though some improvements in site accessibility and trash management could enhance future visits.

I had an amazing experience! only problem we had there was trash cans next to our camp spot, well there was trash allll around it. The camp managers, drove past in 3 times that we know of. Not once did they stop and clean it up. Slowed down to look at it, but never cleaned it up.

Loved the campground. Hated the vault toilet. I’ve never seen one so clean, yet so full. It was scary. Obviously, the camp hosts were doing their best to still keep it nice. The national forest service should be ashamed..

The price of firewood was ridiculous! $8./bundle.

The camp ground itself was enchanting. Lots of old forest growth, tons of tree varieties, and great fishing. Haven’t had that much fun in 20 years. My only hesitation in submitting this review is not wanting to leak how truly delightful it was there.

First off we have a fifth wheel toy hauler little over 13 ft high and 8 ft wide 35 feet long. Driving through the campground was very sketchy branches were hitting us all over. When we got to our site the road was too narrow so we could not back into it. The site stated that we would fit. Sending this to say we did not glamp. On the other hand the camp host was very kind to us. If it weren't for the overgrown roads to get through the campground we would consider going back to a different site there that we could possibly get into, without damaging our trailer more. Please update your listings to say what will actually be able to get into the spot not just what fits physically.

I had never camped here before but was pleasantly surprised! We had no cell service and lost it probably 15 minutes out from the campground. The campground was extremely clean, the hosts very pleasant and they consistently drove around the camp to check on folks and introduce themselves. This was a smaller campground but did not feel cramped whatsoever. We camped in site 14 and were able to comfortably fit 3 tents and 2 vehicles. Lots of trees around for hammocks. The trail that went around the lake was about a mile and fairly easy although i would recommend close toed shoes. The lake was small and perfect for floating or paddle boards. There is not really a beach area so don't plan on bringing a towel to lay out down near the water. Plenty of overflow parking throughout the campground and potable water at only one central point and the hosts sold firewood for a reasonable price. I would highly recommend this campground if you're looking for something close to the greater spokane area and needing some time away from cell service.

Beautiful lake. Very secluded. Lots of shade around the campsite. We did not plan on having a fire as we assumed that there was a fire ban. Turns out there wasn’t for that campground. Next time I will check before we leave. We will come back.

We arrived early Thursday afternoon. Extremely quiet. Took our canoe and kayaks out on the lake. So peaceful. Loved our campsite and how much space we had. Friday, for most of the day, was also extremely quiet. Friday evening the campsites started filling up. For the most part it was still quiet. We were able to have a campfire. Bathroom was very clean. Not bad for a pit toilet. There is a hand pump in the middle of the campground. A notice states it’s for fresh water drinking. No doing dishes. One web site we read said there is no water available. So we brought plenty. We did use the hand pump and out came brown water. We pumped for a while to clean out the pipes, but it was still brown. Maybe remove the fresh water notice?
Camp hosts were very friendly. Somewhere in the camp, someone was using their generator well past 1:00 am. Two nights in a row. Maybe they needed it, but it would have been nice for some quiet time.

This was the first camping trip for our two kids, 5 and 7 and this couldn’t have been a more perfect spot! Gorgeous lake, fun hiking trail, docks to fish and jump from, lots of wildlife, and a nice clean camp spot. We will be back!
