Spring Hollow Campground

This place misses the 4/5-star mark because of the campsite manager. But aside from that, it was really fun, and the place seemed to be well taken care of.

It was a packed weekend and so there was a lot of traffic coming in and out, keeping the roads busy. There was a campsite RIGHT next to us that was vacant so we wanted to set up our cornhole boards there to avoid the traffic. I asked the manager if it would be OK and explained we would move/leave the moment someone needed it. He said he would charge us $22, the daily rate for a campsite, if we did that.... what a grouch.

And now I'm just being petty. But when we arrived our dogs jumped out of my truck and he exclaimed our dogs must be on a leash all weekend. Well... guess whose dog was off leash and constantly in our campsite. Mr. Grouch himself. Seriously.... what a jerk.

Literally 30 seconds into our camping trip, my son was bitten by a rattlesnake right in the middle of the campground. Not in a bush or long grass, but 10 ft from the concrete pad. Normally, I wouldn't fault the campground for natural issues, but a little girl was bitten at the same campground a few weeks prior to our visit. It would have been nice to be warned that rattlesnakes were prevalent in the area prior to our visit so that we could take the proper precautions. I will not be visiting here again. Its a beautiful campground with lots of activities for families (hiking, fishing, swimming,etc.), but the risk isn't worth it in my opinion.

We really enjoyed our experience at Spring Hollow. The campsite layout was a bit strange - there was a lot of parking down below and then a cement pad up a hill with 6 or 7 large picnic tables (I think it was originally designed to be a day use area). We managed to fit our two camp trailers on the corner/side of the pad and get our vehicles onto the pad but it was a bit awkward. The campground was absolutely beautiful. It was right next to stream (and not too buggy) and the trees gave us shade most of the day. Though it was hot during the day, it cooled down pretty fast at night. The flush toilets/sinks in the group site bathroom were also very much appreciated.
There is a trailhead for a very popular trail right next to the cement pad, so there were people walking through all day. Our main complaint was that if the gate to the group sites was left open, cars would try to drive through our campsite and would come up the little hill at 25 mph and then have to hit the brakes and back down the hill or use our campsite to turn around - that was a bit scary since we had a few little kids in our group. Otherwise we had a lot of fun and really enjoyed our stay.

Great location and campground. We hiked the Crimson Trail and the Wind Caves. Great hosts too.
