About South Campground (UT)

Reservations for South Campground are available up to 14 days before your arrival and may extend up to two days beyond this 14-day booking window.  For visitors to Zion National Park, South Campground is an ideal place to stay. Located near the park's south entrance, the campground is just a short walk from the main visitor center, the Zion Canyon Shuttle System and the adjacent town of Springdale. The canyon and most of the park's trails are only accessible by shuttle bus from approximately the end of February until the end of November each year. Season Dates: South Campground is open from early March to the end of October. Reservations are available up to 14 days before your arrival. For example, if you want to make a reservation for March 14 to 16, you may book this reservation beginning on March 1. Reservations that extend beyond the 14 day booking window cannot be altered. For reservations more than 14 days ahead of arrival, please check Watchman Campground which offers reservations six months in advance of arrival.

This campsite gave us beautiful views, very clean restrooms. There’s an area to wash dishes by the restrooms and refill on water. No showers. It was very hot, very little shade. So make sure to bring a mesh canopy! Lots of yellow jackets, tarantula, frogs, and lots of other insects. Make sure to bring bug spray :) I have at&t had prefect service. Wasn’t able to burn firewood <\3 so make sure to bring a gas stove in case that happens to you too!

We had a large paved pull through site without hook ups. Limited generator hours. Clean restrooms, flush toilets, no showers. Dump station. Walking distance to visitor center and shuttle. Creek close by to walk in. Very helpful camp host. Perfect location for us to stay in Zion on short notice.

Super clean and open. Not a real woodsy campsite but perfect location as a base for Zion. Could walk to shuttle as well as Springdale for coffee, rentals and market. All volunteers were beyond helpful and nice. I plan to camp here everytime in Zion.

Amazing campground for being immersed in Zion National Park. I saw wild elk roaming on my first night, many lizards, small toads, and I went to a Ranger talk about the stars at the Watchman campground amphitheater. I’d recommend to get familiar with the area when there is sunlight because it’s easy to get lost in the dark. Most sites are essentially parking spots next to each other, the walk in ones are a bit more separated though you feel on display, like you’re in a human camping exhibit as the main campground trail circles around this area and is quite busy.
One of the hosts warned about wind from Midnight to 8am which I underestimated at first. NAIL DOWN YOUR TENT. I was lazy and didn’t heed their warning, until the witching hour begun and it felt as if my tent was being attacked. Shaking violently for hours I gave up and used a rock to add the supports while bathed in the moonlight. This vastly improved the night but still expect to have your tent ravaged by wind specifically between those hours. Near the shuttle and a very popular bike trail.

Policies & Rules

Arrival & departure

  • Present a photo ID upon check-in; the primary occupant's name cannot be changed after booking.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.

General

  • Photo ID: The primary occupant listed on the camping reservation must present a photo ID upon check-in at Zion National Park campgrounds. The name of the primary occupant cannot be changed once a reservation is made. This rule is in place due to the competitive nature of the location and to prevent visitors from re-selling sites.&nbsp;
  • Pass Discounts. Lifetime Passes (e.g., Senior, Access, Golden Age Senior and Golden Age Access) may allow a 50% discount off camping. The pass must be present upon check-in with valid ID. The pass only allows a 50% discount on one site.
  • VEHICLE SIZE LIMITS. There are length, height and width limits to drive on Utah State Route 9 between the East Entrance and the campgrounds:• Vehicle Length: Single or combined vehicles over 50 ft. (15 m) long are prohibited from traveling through the park between the East Entrance and the campground. If your total length is greater than 50 ft., you must enter the park through the South Entrance in the town of Springdale.• Vehicle Height Limit: Vehicles taller than 13 ft. (33 m) are prohibited from traveling through the park between the East Entrance and the campground.• Vehicle Width Limit: Vehicles 7'10' (2.4 m) in width or 11'4' (3.4 m) in height or larger require one-lane traffic control through the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel, located between the east entrance and the campground. Nearly all RVs, trailers, fifth-wheels, dual-wheel trucks and campers require a tunnel escort. Visitors requiring this service must purchase a $15 tunnel permit at the entrance station, valid for two trips through the tunnel for the same vehicle during a 7-day period. The Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel is open for over-sized vehicles from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until June 6, 2026. Visit the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel web page for the most current information.
  • Generators are only allowed from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
  • No Shower or Laundry Facilities.
  • Hammocks. Hammocks are not allowed in any of the park's campgrounds.
  • Campfires. Campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings. The park will post any fire restrictions on the Current Conditions page.&nbsp;Campers are responsible for understanding current fire restrictions.&nbsp;Do not leave fires unattended. Extinguish them with water until they are cool to the touch. Wood gathering is prohibited in the park.
  • Food and garbage must be stored properly at all times. Food should be stored inside a vehicle or inside the food storage locker provided on each site. Garbage should be secured in the same way or be disposed of in the receptacles provided in the campground. Food is defined as food, drinks, toiletries, cosmetics, pet food and bowls, and any other scented items. Coolers, dirty stoves, grills, non-disposable tableware and cookware must be washed or stored in the same manner as food.&nbsp;&nbsp;Feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited.

Fees & deposits

  • A separate park entrance fee is required, payable upon arrival or in advance; interagency passes are accepted.
  • Lifetime passes may grant a 50% discount on camping for one site only; valid ID must be shown at check-in.

Vehicles & parking

  • There are strict vehicle size limits on Utah State Route 9; oversized vehicles may require a tunnel permit for passage through the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel.

Safety & rules

  • The maximum stay permitted is 14 days.
  • Generators can be used during specified hours: 8:00 am-10:00 am and 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.

Amenities

  • There are no shower or laundry facilities at the campground; these can be found in Springdale.

Site types & loops

  • Hammocks may only be set up within the campsite footprint and must be attached to suitably sized and padded trees.
  • Tree tents are prohibited in Watchman and South Campground.
