About South Campground (UT)

Reservations for South Campground are available up to 14 days before your arrival and may extend up to two days beyond this 14-day booking window.  For visitors to Zion National Park, South Campground is an ideal place to stay. Located near the park's south entrance, the campground is just a short walk from the main visitor center, the Zion Canyon Shuttle System and the adjacent town of Springdale. The canyon and most of the park's trails are only accessible by shuttle bus from approximately the end of February until the end of November each year. Season Dates: South Campground is open from early March to the end of October. Reservations are available up to 14 days before your arrival. For example, if you want to make a reservation for March 14 to 16, you may book this reservation beginning on March 1. Reservations that extend beyond the 14 day booking window cannot be altered. For reservations more than 14 days ahead of arrival, please check Watchman Campground which offers reservations six months in advance of arrival.

Campground was excellent. Large paved spaces. The campground must be less than a year old. Set up very nicely close to visitors center and park buses. Highly recommend staying here as you are inside the park and don’t have to wait through long lines to get in every day. Ranger programs were informative.

I would like to have given it a higher review as it just had a complete restoration and all new roads, pads, restrooms, and much more but many of the sites including ours were over grown with tumbleweeds that were growing over the pad that we were in so we were not able to sit out with our awning out and enjoy the views of the mountains surrounding the area. If we were staying longer than one night we would have asked for a better site. We live in the desert and have tumbleweeds and know if you don't address the problem immediately, before they turn to seed, you will never catch up because every seed that grows produces hundreds more seeds that just lay on the ground waiting to sprout with rain and you don't use any herbicides which I understand and like that you don't but not the damage has been done. When they dry they become a fire problem and you already have fire problem due to poor forest management, not your fault. We have been to the park about 7 times in the last 36 years and love the views and hiking trails. We left and went to Cedar Canyon Campground and Cedar Breaks National Monument.

The campground has recently been remodeled so it is in the early stages of growing back up. It was nice and will only get more beautiful. There were many paved areas to walk the dogs. The scenery was outstanding!

After camping at dispersed spots for five months, this was like staying at a five star hotel. An absolutely beautiful spot at the bottom of the canyon, with shuttle Sevice close to both the park and Springdale. Only demerit, and this is from a camper who has had no neighbors for five months, the spots are close.

The newly remodeled campground was stunning. Nestled in the valley among the peaks of Zion and surrounded by the activities that exist, the easy access to the visitor's center and busses; the clean and easily accessible restrooms as well as the spacious camping areas make this a must camp location for those who plan to pitch a tent, or park an RV at Zion.

Our walk-in campsite was right next to the parking spot with a gorgeous view of The Watchman. The bathroom facility is excellent, including a sink with warm water to wash dishes. The facilities 5 min away in Springdale are awesome for weary car campers (showers, the grocery sells large blocks of ice). The only downside of this campground is that there isn't much shade. We solved for that problem by sitting down by the creek next door and going to the brewery in Springdale which is an oasis when South Campground is hot.

The campground location was gorgeous and the campground hosts (Andy & Rochelle) were absolutely wonderful. The sites were on top of one another but that didn’t bother us on this trip as other campers around us were quiet and respectful of campground rules. The bad part and reason I can’t give a review of “outstanding is that there was NO SHADE whatsoever in the campground. The entire campground was devoid of shade trees - had we known this, we would not have stayed here as we were on motorcycles and not able to travel with an easy-up or something similar.

Bathrooms were clean and there was plenty of potable water.

Policies & Rules

Arrival & departure

  • Present a photo ID upon check-in; the primary occupant's name cannot be changed after booking.

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.

General

  • Photo ID: The primary occupant listed on the camping reservation must present a photo ID upon check-in at Zion National Park campgrounds. The name of the primary occupant cannot be changed once a reservation is made. This rule is in place due to the competitive nature of the location and to prevent visitors from re-selling sites.&nbsp;
  • Pass Discounts. Lifetime Passes (e.g., Senior, Access, Golden Age Senior and Golden Age Access) may allow a 50% discount off camping. The pass must be present upon check-in with valid ID. The pass only allows a 50% discount on one site.
  • VEHICLE SIZE LIMITS. There are length, height and width limits to drive on Utah State Route 9 between the East Entrance and the campgrounds:• Vehicle Length: Single or combined vehicles over 50 ft. (15 m) long are prohibited from traveling through the park between the East Entrance and the campground. If your total length is greater than 50 ft., you must enter the park through the South Entrance in the town of Springdale.• Vehicle Height Limit: Vehicles taller than 13 ft. (33 m) are prohibited from traveling through the park between the East Entrance and the campground.• Vehicle Width Limit: Vehicles 7'10' (2.4 m) in width or 11'4' (3.4 m) in height or larger require one-lane traffic control through the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel, located between the east entrance and the campground. Nearly all RVs, trailers, fifth-wheels, dual-wheel trucks and campers require a tunnel escort. Visitors requiring this service must purchase a $15 tunnel permit at the entrance station, valid for two trips through the tunnel for the same vehicle during a 7-day period. The Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel is open for over-sized vehicles from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until June 6, 2026. Visit the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel web page for the most current information.
  • Generators are only allowed from 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
  • No Shower or Laundry Facilities.
  • Hammocks. Hammocks are not allowed in any of the park's campgrounds.
  • Campfires. Campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings. The park will post any fire restrictions on the Current Conditions page.&nbsp;Campers are responsible for understanding current fire restrictions.&nbsp;Do not leave fires unattended. Extinguish them with water until they are cool to the touch. Wood gathering is prohibited in the park.
  • Food and garbage must be stored properly at all times. Food should be stored inside a vehicle or inside the food storage locker provided on each site. Garbage should be secured in the same way or be disposed of in the receptacles provided in the campground. Food is defined as food, drinks, toiletries, cosmetics, pet food and bowls, and any other scented items. Coolers, dirty stoves, grills, non-disposable tableware and cookware must be washed or stored in the same manner as food.&nbsp;&nbsp;Feeding wildlife is strictly prohibited.

Fees & deposits

  • A separate park entrance fee is required, payable upon arrival or in advance; interagency passes are accepted.
  • Lifetime passes may grant a 50% discount on camping for one site only; valid ID must be shown at check-in.

Vehicles & parking

  • There are strict vehicle size limits on Utah State Route 9; oversized vehicles may require a tunnel permit for passage through the Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel.

Safety & rules

  • The maximum stay permitted is 14 days.
  • Generators can be used during specified hours: 8:00 am-10:00 am and 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.

Amenities

  • There are no shower or laundry facilities at the campground; these can be found in Springdale.

Site types & loops

  • Hammocks may only be set up within the campsite footprint and must be attached to suitably sized and padded trees.
  • Tree tents are prohibited in Watchman and South Campground.
