About Red Cliffs Campground

Red Cliffs Recreation Area includes a campground, day use areas, a non-motorized trail system, and interpreted public use sites. Dinosaurs left their footprints, now visible in the sandstone. Ancestral Puebloans lived here in the 10th century, growing corn, beans, and squash along Quail and Leeds Creek. Mid-19th century pioneers farmed here, supplying the area’s silver miners with food. Located within the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, the Recreation Area is managed to conserve and protect the natural and cultural resources of the public lands.

Red Cliffs was beautiful the night with all the stars was glorious. However, definitely need to upgrade to amber lights since the bugs were attracted to any little bit of light. Aside from that, the campground was clean, vault toilets were clean, and the water at each site was a plus! Highly recommend.

Since the campgrounds do not have a ranger or host on duty, there is no one to enforce quiet hours or any other rules that this campground has. One group in particular was blasting their music all afternoon and into the evening, and we had to go kindly ask them to turn it down since it was past 9pm and people were trying to enjoy the quietness of being in nature. Other than that, the sites were good, and the portapotties were clean. It was nice having a water spigot in each site!

This is a gorgeous campground with various hikes for different abilities. some sites have wifi, most have shade- it was quiet the week I went. Some drawbacks were: invasive viney-like plants that are pretty with yellow flowers at first glance, they leave little thorns on the ground- on my previous visit I ended up with tiny holes in my tent floor, even with a ground cloth underneath. I was going to just sleep on the ground but there were a fair amount of ants which wasn’t appealing. Also, there were small bits of garbage left around my site including some left over from someone’s bathroom business, which was grotesque. It had been very rainy so it might have washed down from somewhere more hidden. In spite of all this, I would still return- it is that lovely. Note to careless campers: Dirt is not your toilet. If you don’t want to use a porta potti, at least have some consideration of others and practice “leave no trace” and bring your own friggen garbage bag and Use it! It’s really not that hard.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful. We tent camped at site #9 and it was very clean. There was a covering, fire pit, area for the tent, and water spigot just for us. The bathrooms were also very clean and did not smell. We went mid September and it was still very hot — about 80 degrees was the lowest so be aware. At night it is very quiet. There are a lot of ants and bugs at night as well so a bug proof tent is definitely a must. All the sites are walking distance to the dinosaur tracks which are so cool! Would camp here again, just maybe a bit more towards the cooler months!

Space was very nice. A good amount of cig butts left around site when I arrived. Tent pad was all gravel and had some trouble getting stakes in some places
