About Wilderness Road Campground

Wilderness Road Campground is nestled in the lush forests of the Appalachian Mountains in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park , where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. You can access miles of forest and mountain trails directly from the campground.    While in the park, drive up to the Pinnacle for a breathtaking view of the mountains or check out Civil War earthworks. Hike to the pale cliffs of White Rocks, the gaping mouth of Sand Cave, or the historic Hensley Settlement to see how mountain folk once lived. Stand in 3 states at the same time or immerse yourself in thousands of acres of proposed wilderness. Walk a path once traveled by the bison, Native American, longhunter, and pioneer. Stand in the narrow mountain gap where Daniel Boone stood and where thousands of people risked everything to reach and settle what would become America.    Wilderness Road Campground includes 151 wooded sites open to tents, trailers, and RV campers. Electrical hookups (20-, 30-, or 50-amp) are available at 43 sites. Group sites are also available. The campground is open year-round with limited campsites, as well as the comfort station between loops C and D, open during the winter season (mid-November to mid-March).

One of my favorite campgrounds, Wilderness Road has some of the best day hikes east of the Rocky Mountains. While many choose to stick close to the campground those who love to get out and explore can find tons of activities to keep them entertained. Make sure you get over to Middlesboro, Ky - the only town in America that exist entirely inside an ancient meteor crater. Go to the Cumberland Gap visitor center to learn about the history of the area and swing into the historic town of Cumberland Gap for some great food and shopping.

Although there was a centralized map of trails color coding them and more prominent markers would have been great. Also maybe some activities to do beyond just hiking (community nights, cookouts, etc)

Campground was beautiful and very clean. Bathroom/shower facility also very nice. Not having wifi or laundry facilities like the commercial campgrounds was worth giving up because of this great experience.Price can't be beat.

This used to be our favorite campground to take the grandkids camping at. Not sure if it has anything to do with their move to using recreation.gov, but they now have a 10AM CHECKOUT TIME which seems ridiculous to me. Although not technically absolutely totally impossible, it is VERY hard for a large tent camping family like ours to pack up wet gear and be fully out of the sites by 10AM. I've never camped at another campsite that required this early of checkout so I sincerely hope this gets changed to at least 11AM or later.

Campsites were large and spaced well apart. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained. There was some noise from the road nearby but probably would be better later in the year when there are leaves on the trees to muffle in. My big complaint is the tree maintenance or lack thereof. Walking through the campground I counted 6 campsites that had trees that had fallen down across the campsite. These were trees that appear to have fallen due to natural circumstances and not felled for maintenance reasons. As someone who camps in a pop up, it scares me to think that trees falling across the camping pads could fall on my camper with me inside it. I understand this is a possibility anywhere but I’ve never been to a campground where there is so much evidence of this being a problem.

Quiet peaceful campground. No water at sites but has a water station as you come into the park so you can fill up your holding tanks. Lots of sites are unlevel. Some quite a bit. Some sites are set up backwards. The power box, picnic table, and fire ring are on the wrong side. You have to pull in instead of back in.
