The park itself is wonderful, but be choosy about the site that you pick….
The 30 amp breaker would trip immediately with no load. We had a 50 amp adapter to solve that problem, but the bollard post in front of the electrical connections only allowed the door to open a few inches, making it difficult to plug in both the adapter and our surge protector.
The site had at least a 6” road-to-back drop over our 170” wheel base, which meant the back tires utilizing the parking brake were barely on the levelers. (We retracted the front hydraulics and allowed the vehicle to be a couple inches low on the backend to ensure the wheels were firmly on the levelers rather than risk any problems with rolling.)
Having said all that, it is a wonderful park with lots of trails, history, and beautiful views.

I have stayed at this campground a few times. I have always found it to be clean, quiet, and overall nice. I have stayed in different summer months and every time I have pulled in during the evening, found an empty site, and booked it online after I was there. The bathrooms and showers are nothing special, but there is hot running water.

The rangers at the park was courteous and help watch as I backing my site that didn’t hit nothing showers was clean thank the park service for enjoyable stay will be back

We’ve been to this campground multiple times and it’s a great place. Close to amenities but still quiet and nice. The only problem we experienced that we normally do not is the amount of barking dogs and unattended dogs. We didn’t see a campground host at all on this trip so maybe that’s why?, but even walking through the campground was frustrating due to all the barking dogs. We have a dog and she is always leashed and she never barks at people, kids on bikes etc. - it was pretty annoying to experience this here since it’s always been a great park.

This campground was a great find for us while we traveled east to our home in NC. We don't like interstate travel and staying off the interstate allowed us to make this an overnight stop. We decided to make it a two night stay when we realized what Cumberland Gap had to offer. The campground is nicely kept and we had a site with electric because of the heat in late July. It is for that reason that our loop was full and others were almost empty. There is a nice dump station with potable water on the way in. There are showers but we did not look in the bathhouse. Our stay was quiet and restful. After a good night's rest we went hiking to see Gap Cave , Tri State Peak, Wilderness Rd. and Object Lesson Rd. for about 6 miles total leaving from Daniel Boone Information Center. Before we hiked we got great information from the Cumberland Gap visitor center and watched a really good movie there. We travel with a 26 foot Rockwood mini lite travel trailer.

The campground is popular, but has many spots and all seem good. The primitive spots were almost empty, and electric was about half full. Sites are slightly sloped, some paved and some gravel. Quiet at night, normal campground sounds at day. Bath house good, including hot showers. Hiking nearby, and easy walk to Cumberland Gap to visit. Drive to Middlesboro for groceries. (10 minutes) Campground says open year round, so I plan to come back in winter. One of my new favorites.

Wilderness Road Campground is located at the end of National Park Road, off US Highway 58 in Virginia.
- From the Park Visitor Center in Middlesboro, Kentucky (approximately 5 miles): When leaving the visitor center parking lot, turn left onto Pinnacle View Road, then take the ramp down and merge into US-25E S toward Harrogate, Tennessee. Go through the tunnel into Tennessee. Turn right onto US-58 E toward Jonesville, Virginia and Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Cross into Virginia. Continue on US-58 approximately 2.4 miles, then turn left onto National Park Road. Continue on National Park Road to the campground entrance.
- From Knoxville, Tennessee (approximately 56 miles): Take TN-331 (Tazewell Pike) toward Tazewell, approximately 39 miles. Turn left onto US-25E N toward Harrogate. Go through Harrogate, then turn right onto US-58 E toward Jonesville, Virginia and Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. If you enter the tunnel then you missed the turn. On US-58 you will cross into VIrginia. Continue on US-58 approximately 2.4 miles, then turn left onto National Park Road. Continue on National Park Road to the campground entrance.
- From Abingdon, Virginia (approximately 115 miles): Take I-81 S toward Bristol, Tennessee. After approximately 18 miles, take US-11W S toward Kingsport. After approximately 20 miles, turn right onto US-23 N. Cross into Virginia. After approximately 22 miles, turn left onto US-58 W. Continue on US-58 W for approximately 52 miles, then turn right onto National Park Road. Continue on National Park Road to the campground entrance.
- From Lexington, Kentucky (approximately 130 miles): Take I-75 S toward Knoxville, Tennessee. After approximately 75 miles, take exit 29 onto US-25E S (Cumberland Gap Parkway). Continue on US-25E S approximately 48 miles, going through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and into Tennessee. Turn right onto US-58 E toward Jonesville, Virginia and Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Cross into Virginia. Continue on US-58 approximately 2.4 miles, then turn left onto National Park Road. Continue on National Park Road to the campground entrance.
Wilderness Road Campground is accessible via US Route 58, which is approximately 13 miles to the south. Additionally, Interstate 75 is about 25 miles to the west, providing further access to the region.

General
- Camping is permitted no more than 14 days within a rolling 30-day period. Campers should be prepared for unlevel campsites.
- BEARS ARE ACTIVE IN THE PARK. Please help keep humans, pets, and bears safe. NEVER feed wild animals. DO NOT leave pets unattended. Store food and scented items in your vehicle. Dispose of pet food, food scraps, and garbage properly. DO NOT leave trash or food scraps in fire rings. Report bear sightings to a park ranger or by calling the park visitor center at 606-248-2817.
- FIREWOOD must be purchased in the campground or within Lee County, VA, or gathered in the campground (down and dead wood only). Wood from outside Lee County may be infested with non-native insects that damage and kill native trees.
- Please note there is NO Wi-Fi at the campground.
- Pets are allowed but must be on a leash and under a person's control at all times.
- POISON IVY grows naturally throughout the area, including in the campground. Learn how to identify and avoid it. Stay on marked trails and roads. Wipe down pets that have explored undergrowth. Clean clothes and gear after contact.
- Quiet hours are from .
- Cars and trailers must be parked on asphalt at designated sites.
- Loops B, C, D and comfort station #2 will remain open from mid-November through mid-March for the winter season. The comfort station located between loops A & B and all other loops will be closed during this time. Campers should plan accordingly.
- Supplies are available in Cumberland Gap and Harrogate, TN; Gibson Station, VA; and Middlesboro, KY.
