About Wilderness Road Campground

Wilderness Road Campground is nestled in the lush forests of the Appalachian Mountains in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park , where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet. You can access miles of forest and mountain trails directly from the campground.    While in the park, drive up to the Pinnacle for a breathtaking view of the mountains or check out Civil War earthworks. Hike to the pale cliffs of White Rocks, the gaping mouth of Sand Cave, or the historic Hensley Settlement to see how mountain folk once lived. Stand in 3 states at the same time or immerse yourself in thousands of acres of proposed wilderness. Walk a path once traveled by the bison, Native American, longhunter, and pioneer. Stand in the narrow mountain gap where Daniel Boone stood and where thousands of people risked everything to reach and settle what would become America.    Wilderness Road Campground includes 151 wooded sites open to tents, trailers, and RV campers. Electrical hookups (20-, 30-, or 50-amp) are available at 43 sites. Group sites are also available. The campground is open year-round with limited campsites, as well as the comfort station between loops C and D, open during the winter season (mid-November to mid-March).

Lovely, wooded park with nice sized camp sites. Not all were level sites so make sure to bring leveling gear, but worth it! The weekend we were there they had a guest archeologist who gave a nice talk about Indian mounds, which I really enjoyed! They also offered a night hike. The surrounding area is beautiful, and you are not far from Gap Cave, which I also highly recommend. Wilderness Road State Park is not far away either and well worth the visit. Very friendly and informative Park Rangers as well! If you are in for further exploring, you should check out Big Stone Gap, VA. They do a play called The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, which was very good! We enjoyed everything about our weekend and will definitely be going back! Oh, and if you are looking for a good place to eat, I highly recommend the Whistle Pig on Hwy 58 between the campground and Wilderness Road State Park. It just recently opened, and it was oh so good! Beautiful area to spend the weekend! Ten out of ten recommend!!

Our site, C02, felt very private. The private showers were nice and we never had to wait during our midweek stay. Be aware that bears are active in the area and they trapped one two sites away from us. And we pulled several ticks from our dog as well as ourselves.

Very nice campground, and campsite. Only comment which we informed the Rangers, was the 30 Amp fuse kept popping. Happily, I have a 50 - 30 amp converter plug so it wasn't a problem.

Could use more gravel at campsite 15. Most on slope around asphalt has washed away. Not many water spigots.
Loved the spacing & trees between sites.
Great hosts from FL. Sure appreciate the bear trapping efforts, as it walked right by my camper.
Sorry the NPS is getting cut - this WH is nuts!

Campground was easy to maneuver and we had a 42 foot motorhome and we were towing a Jeep. Quiet and peaceful. The campground was clean and well maintained. Close to the great amphitheater program. Our spot had 50 amp electric hookup and it was private and we will come back.

Been camping here for 12 years and it's my favorite campground. It's the first time that there were a couple of bears roaming around made it exciting.

We came back here because our first stay a week prior was pleasant however this time was a complete 360. We rolled in from Michigan around 1am and took less than 15 mins to setup and go to sleep till morning. During which time a lady come up to my face and proceeded to school me on quiet hours. I told her I understood and we were almost done. The next morning we woke up to a ranger at our tent talking about complaints about us. We explained what happened and all seemed good. An hour later another ranger shows up and asks us if everything is okay. We explained again and all was okay until another ranger all different shows up about 45 mins later. At this point we wanted out and after talking with this ranger we decided to take a loss and cancelled, lost money, and completely changed our opinion on this place and the state of Virginia. As we were leaving we saw 5 rangers patrolling around the campground. Never in my life have we been so confused, embarrassed, and unsafe all because of a woman who doesn’t understand that people can roll in late with travels. We will never come back and honestly never stay in Virginia again. This was uncalled for and these rangers should be ashamed of themselves as well as the woman who terrorized us to get us out. Who we saw her doing the same thing to another camper as we were leaving
