Beautiful park! Not always hot water in the showers and lack of wifi is a concern because no one can reach you but that is not always a bad thing! 2 fawns greeted us when we arrived at our site and fireflies blew us away at night. We went in mid-June. Fabulous!

The park rangers and hosts are exceptional when providing services. We were at Big Meadows campground for 16 nights. Because we didn't have a reservation we moved to five different sites. This was during the time new tar was being installed (looks fantastic) and they were managing the closure of sites. It was also during the storm that blew out the electricity. Made us realize how much we appreciate the showers. Ten minutes of hot water with good pressure for $5. Great bargain. During all this the park rangers were courteous, friendly and helpful.
At night we went to the Lodge and sat in the Great Room to play cards. On occasion we even indulged in blackberry ice cream. Yum. It was a wonderful vacation.

Hawksbill hike provided great views. It was a treat to attend the worship service provided by A Christian Ministry in the National Parks on Sunday morning at the amphitheater, followed by brunch at the restaurant.
Despite campground paving and limited site availability, registration went smoothly and the clerks were very accommodating.

We had a relaxing, enjoyable time in the campground. This was our sixth annual stay in June. Our children and grandchildren join us for the short week. The kids hike trails and my wife and I read, relax and build campfires.

We recently stayed at Big Meadows Campground and overall had a good experience. The campground itself was clean, well-maintained, and in a fantastic location. The biggest highlight was having access to several incredible hikes directly from our campsite, allowing us to leave the car behind and immediately immerse ourselves in Shenandoah’s scenery.

My main frustrations weren’t really with the campground itself, but with circumstances surrounding our stay. Quiet hours after 10 p.m. didn’t seem to be observed by many campers, and there were several nights when noise carried well beyond the designated time. If you’re hoping for complete peace and solitude, it’s worth remembering that this is a large, popular front-country campground with many visitors.

There was also an active paving project during our visit, and the construction noise was noticeable at the beginning and end of our stay. To be fair, that’s a temporary issue and not something the park can necessarily avoid when maintaining infrastructure.

Looking back, I think I came in expecting something closer to a backcountry camping experience, which wasn’t realistic. Big Meadows is a busy campground that serves a lot of people, and judged on those terms, it does a good job. If you go in with appropriate expectations, you’ll find a clean, convenient basecamp with outstanding access to some of the park’s best hiking.
