Despite the shutdown, I had a great time. I'm sure I would have enjoyed the ranger led programs which were not available. However, I got great advice for good hikes that fit my time and distance preferences. I would definitely go back.

There are short and long hikes. Be sure you allow enough time to complete the round trip hikes so as not to be caught in the dark. There are two hikes I would recommend, White Oak Canyon Falls and Dark Hollow Falls. Both require proper hiking attire such as, good hiking boots, rain gear and a good solid walking stick (you should be able to find one of these anywhere around the park. If you're camping and want some entertainment, the Big Medows Lodge Tap Room usually has that (no cover charge) plus you can get something to drink or eat too. There is usually a jig-saw puzzle or two in the lounge on the first floor of the lodge.

Camping in Big Meadows went very well. The sites were easy to locate and the camp host/camp site rangers were very friendly and helpful. The camp site had some trash scattered around and I wish people picked up better before they left the sites.

I have been going to Big Meadows for over 50 years. It's such a special place. The bathrooms are clean and the heater was sufficient. The campsite was spacious and somewhat private. The campsite driveway definitely needs to be replaced, but we were tent camping so it was fine.
