About Cave Mountain Lake Group Camp

Cave Mountain Lake Group Camp is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and welcomes visitors to enjoy the rustic beauty and peacefulness of the area. Easy access from the interstate and close proximity to historic Lexington and Natural Bridge State Park make Cave Mountain Lake an ideal destination. Cave Mountain Lake covers seven acres and was built in the late 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps, using existing natural rock buttresses to form the 35-foot dam. A grassy field extends from the lake's sandy beach to forested hills that paint a scenic backdrop.

We really loved the group campsite here! Creek running behind it, nice pads for the tents, large fire pit plus a grill, plus two smaller fire pits with grill tops; bathrooms were super close by. The swimming area was only a 10 minute walk from the site. Plenty of firewood and lots for sale on your way to the site. Definitely plan to be back!

The group camp site (#1) was a fantastic site. Situated on a babbling brook, the site accommodated a group of 17 (6 tents) with room for at least a few more. It was set up with a bear-proof lock box on the site which was very helpful. We thought we would have to put our food/coolers in the cars. the parking lot is right there so moving our stuff was quite easy. the bathroom is across the road but still only less than a minute away. Firewood is sold at multiple stores in the area. There is NO WIFI connection about 15 minutes leading up to campsite and at campsite so if you need to coordinate with your group, do so while you are at street level BEFORE turning to Cave Mountain Lake Rd. Also, there are no signs TO the group site. Turn into Thomas Jefferson state park-Cave Mtn Lake entrance, go past the unmanned guard booth and follow signs for family campsite. Once you get to the campsite area, the family area is to the left and the group site is to the right. Its a great location for visiting the local Natural Bridge and Caverns. The campsite was clean, and perfect for our Girl Scout troop. The bathhouse was being worked on so no showers for us during the weekend. No lights in the bathroom. In the group site area, that area of camp was being worked on so in the future it will be even better. A couple in a RV were the camp host and they were close by if we needed them. We felt safe. Also the dumpster was at the end of the parking lot of the group site so it was convenient for us to unload trash. It wasn't noisy. Lights out at camp was 10pm and people adhered to it. We would stay here again in a heart beat.
