Bolar Mountain Recreation Area

We love camping at Lake Moomaw, but the noise level of neighbors and heavy boat traffic took away from our experience this time. We went after the weekend but still had really noisy neighbors that let their kids walk through our site and others' sites. There is no privacy. It just depends how lucky you are with getting good neighbors.

The boat traffic can be incessant and provide an all day hum of motors. In the mornings the water is so clear and beautiful, but by the end of the day the boats have churned it all up.

We like when the water is lower because when it is high (like it was when we camped this time), there is nowhere to hangout next to the water. When it is lower, you can set up chairs and an umbrella and hang out by the water. You can check water levels online. The path to get to the water is narrow and flanked by poison ivy. Before we had neighbors, I moseyed around their waterfront sites and found this to be the case there, too.

The campground does seem somewhat neglected. The reservation cards on our site were weeks old and the fire pits often have trash in them. Seems like no one checks the sites between checkout and check-in. The trail to greenwood point has a lot of downed trees.

The bathrooms were very well maintained, and our water spigot (just across the driveway from the site) worked fine. The store at the marina was open and had ice, firewood (pricey though), emergency supplies, and a cute selection of snacks, drinks, and ice cream.

Absolutely wonderful place to camp and relax. Facilities are nice, the water and scenery is beautiful. No cell service so plan accordingly.

This place is flat out beautiful. There is no staff around however. Not sure if an issue were to arise what could be done. Seems like the crowd was respectful of late night hours and whatnot.
Overall you have to like the water to enjoy this place. We swam, fished, and hung out.

We really enjoyed our stay at Lake Moo Maw. However, there are a few things that need attention. We did not have a host to share these with but the water hookup at our site leaked all over the place. We ended up putting water in our camper tank and using it from there to keep the leaks from making a mess under our camper. Two of the showers were locked and out of order and one other door was almost impossible to get closed/open. We fished every day we were there and still enjoyed ourselves very much. Camp ground 3 is the best.

This was the first at Lake Moomaw. I booked site 56. Site was level and spacious. Access to the lake was via a short path behind the site.
The camp store was open. The staff there were very nice and welcoming. WiFi is available at the store

love it there, but never saw a park ranger this year, the host skiped on cleaning restrooms a couple day, but it was still great to get out in the woods at the lake, been going camping there over 30 years would go in oct if it was open like it use to be!

First timer, great experience & beautiful area. Facilities were clean and pleasant camping neighbors. Generators were present but generally off by quiet hours.

Moomaw Lake is a great lake.
