Bolar Mountain Recreation Area

Wonderful place to camp. We enjoy visiting the area several times a year but will only be here once this year due to Covid cancellations earlier in the year. The one area I wish that would be attended to is restoring or should I say replacing the missing boat docks. The docks are essential for the campgrounds and aid in assisting the elderly or handicapped campers onto and off their boats.

Camp host was great! BIG problem with showers in bath house. We were theer for a week and only 3 days did the showers work in campground and beach. It almost seems like management doesnt want to do anything in these campgrounds.

Beautiful place! The host did a great job keep the bathhouses clean with Covid going on! Enjoyed our stay!!

Stayed two nights in late June at Site 53, one of the premier sites with private access to the lake. Lake Moomaw is stunningly beautiful, calm, and cool enough to enjoy on an inflatable lounge; wear water shoes, as the lakeshore is very rocky. The campsite is well shaded, spacious, and on soft soil/gravel so you can stake your tent. There's a picnic table and fire pit with grill. A short walk leads you to four separate bathrooms each with a shower. Firewood is available from the camp host ($6). A public beach and camp store (basic necessities, nothing perishable) are just a short drive away, as are several places to start hiking (I recommend Grouse Point Overlook, an easy, 15-25 minute hike uphill but not too steep, with great views).

The only downside was our neighbors - mostly large families in RVs making a ton of noise throughout the day. If you're looking for a quiet getaway, this might not be the place, or you can hope to get lucky and have quieter neighbors. Also, while we were happy to unplug during our camping trip, there is zero cell service (if you have AT&T).

When I called to make the reservation, I reserved 2 camp site as we were traveling with other family members. One of the reservations was cancelled at the last minute. When I called I was told they have some first come first serve slots available. One site was without electric and water and was not even in the same campground as other family member. When I tried to get a refund, the refund request was denied.

As it turned out there was a campsite right beside other family member that was not used where we could have easily been placed but the camp hosted was not able to let us use the site.

It was a nice place to visit but very disappointed in the reservation process.

Was there in Sept 2019 and staff seemed to be disatified with Company responsible for the campground. Also found out campground was closing a month earlier than usual without any advanced notification. This left a lot of people with no where to go since there no other campgrounds in the area. Hopefully something can done about this for this year

The campground was great, better than I even expected. Our camp site was large and had everything we need and that was shown on the website. I would go back again! The lake was beautiful and peaceful.

We love the spacious, roomy sites for camping. The lake is beautiful, not over-crowded.

Truly the most beautiful and my most favorite place I’ve visited! It’s family oriented and lights out at 10:00 so it’s relatively quiet. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Wish the fishing was better but no doubt my “happy place”!

We never went camping because the water level was too low to be able to run the boat and fish. My friend tore his boat up trying to use it in the lake. So I canceled and was refused my refund after being told I was to receive it. Then the park closed for the winter early. So I am out $200+. Completely dissatisfied.
