Hamma Hamma Cabin

Fire restrictions were in place so no campfire. The mouse traps that were normally there disappeared. Stars were out and we saw many falling stars and satellites. Seemed to be less silverware than in the past. A little buck and doe were in the yard in the mornings and evenings, very used to humans. All in all a relaxing visit as usual.

this was our second time at the hama hama cabin. we love this old cabin, but the out side condition is a concern. it is getting run down looking. bring lots of water & i bring electric lanterns so we dont have to use the gas lighting. the gas heating has a mind of its own, it takes some playing with to get it to work. ( part of the charm of this place )

The cabin was in very good condition other than the very messy oven.

My wife double booked herself so I came up alone. Had a fire that night and in the morning. Sausage, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast. Finished a book and packed up. I forgot cofee but someone had left some in the cupboard and saved my morning. Absolutely relaxing. Been here 6 or 7 times on various days and has always been clean. Kudos to all the people that stay there.

The pilot light in the propane fireplace went out partway through our stay. We called it into the ranger station and were told 'thanks for letting us know, it's finicky', but no offer to come out and get it lit. Others have commented that it doesn't work all of the time. We turned the cooking oven to 200 and left the oven door open which warmed up the cabin.

The propane light in the second bedroom hasn't worked for a long time and probably won't ever be fixed. Bring a battery powered lamp for that room.

There's a spigot that provides water outside of the cabin but the water isn't for drinking. We bring a camp shower bag to warm up by the propane fireplace and use that to wash in the bathroom. So many of the other cabins available through the US Forest Service have locked off the bathrooms completely so I have an appreciation for being able to use an inside shower stall with a clean floor and a drain for washing.

There's a carbon monoxide detector in the cabin. Folks today are not used to smelling any gas in our homes any more. Just because you smell propane doesn't mean that it's a problem. Rely on the carbon monoxide detector to let you know if there's an issue.

The Refrigerator/freezer work great, our Ben and Jerry's stayed nicely frozen.

Keyless entry. Enter the four digit code then push the lever to the left. While holding the lever to the left use your other hand to press down the doorknob latch. 'tis nay easy and requires two hands. It automatically locks when the door closes.

The cabin is a registered historical building so the changes that can be made are minimal and you absolutely cannot change the outside appearance. To get around this restriction the screens for the windows are separate and must be retrieved from whichever closet they have wandered into, then placed into the sill with the window resting on top of it. The work really well.

The cabin is cleaned only on Thursday and not that well. Clean before you leave for the next guest.

Such a nice cabin to stay at -so cozy and warm and indoor bathroom! We stayed January 27 and 28th – it rained most of the time but, we had taken a rain gear so we were ready to do some serious hiking. Tried to make it up to Lena Lake but, the trail was nothing but a river so we had to turn back after 2 miles.
The cabin has such good character and is toasty with a propane fireplace. The propane lights gave enough light to get tasks done. There was plenty of room in the front room to bring in the card table to play games near the fireplace.
Loved all the notebooks that have been written over the last 30 years of people staying there. It’s a great family cabin to stay at to get your kids away from all the technology. No electricity or running water worth all the effort to bring extra lanterns and water. It would be advisable to bring a CO2 detector because there was only one working in the entire cabin.
The hiking trail that starts at the cabin does a complete circle 1.5 miles is great to go walking to get to know the flora.
It is an easy hike, so everyone should go on it
