The cabin was a total disappointment. It had no water and no propane, so the only advantage of staying there was that we didn't need to pitch our tent. The description says "In winter no water is available", but the water is actually turned of on Labor Day already (which I do not consider as the start of the winter!). To be completely fair, this particular detail was mentioned in one place of description, so I guess it is also partially on me for not noticing. I have also received an email about it, but by that time it was already too late to change anything. Unfortunately the propane was also out so nothing worked - fridge, lights, heating. I have received the condition report while already on the way and had no chance of printing and filling it out. Even if I had the chance to print it - the place where we should return it is one hour drive from the cabin (in the opposite direction of where we were going). Guys, we are in the 2024 - please make the condition report digital!
Moreover, during the reservation it says that you will receive the entrance code via email. After the reservation I have received an email, which said that I need to call a phone number in order to receive the reservation code. OK great, so now I had to make sure I have a SIM card, which allows me to call (I am not from US) and that I have good enough reception on my way there. Finally, I did receive the code via email just few days before the stay...

We really enjoyed our stay at Deer Creek Guard Station. We didn't use the propane heater as the wood burning stove was quite adequate even though nights were in the low 20s. The cabin was very comfortable. The area around it was remote and beautiful. We loved it and would not hesitate to do it again.
The only drawback is the gravel road to the cabin. It was 13 miles long and extremely rutted. 13 miles took 40 minutes. Just be prepared 🙂

Great location for sure. Hadn't been up the Grey's River in a spell. Secluded from the main road and fenced in. Love it.

Refrigerator was full of mold and toilet was plugged.Too many people leave unused items in cabinets . Very convenient location and beautiful area.

General
- This facility is experiencing a TEMPORARY WATER OUTAGE and intermittent construction on site. Please bring all the water you’ll need for your visit, including drinking water. Due to this the internal Bathroom facilities are also not accessible. There is however a pump toilet available directly adjacent to the building.4-7 days prior to your reservation you will receive an e-mail with your cabin code, condition report and a rules and regulations page. Please read through the rules and regulations page carefully. Fill out and return the completed condition report to the Greys River Ranger District following your stay. If you have any questions please contact the District Office at any time Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM (excluding weekends and Federal Holidays) at 671 N. Washington, Afton, WY 83110 or by phone at (307)886-5300.
- Spring and fall access is not guaranteed, depending on weather and road conditions
- Please bring garbage bags; this is a 'pack it in, pack it out' facility
- You are responsible for cleaning the cabin, please leave it at least as clean as you found it or better. No smoking within the cabins is permitted.
- This site cannot accommodate any additional RV’s or Trailers due to the capacity of the septic system.
- Winter access is by snowmobile only on a groomed trail
- No cell phone coverage or electricity is available.
- In the winter no water is available, bring plenty for drinking, cooking and cleaning. In winter, no water is available
- Off-road vehicles are allowed on designated trails only. A Wyoming ORV or snowmobile permit is required for each vehicle. The permits and free Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available online, the District Office or Alpine Visitor Center in Alpine.
- Beware of poisonous chemicals used to control rodent population
- Forest Service horses may be in the pasture (typically throughout June). Do not feed Forest Service horses, and watch young children if horses are nearby. The cabin is surrounded by the pasture without any separation, so loose horses may get into anything left outside, including garbage or vehicles. You may choose to unpack your vehicle at the cabin but then park it outside the gate. Public use stock corral is available at the back of the station, water access: Deer Creek runs east of the cabin, bring your own water bucket. Hay brought onto the Forest must be certified weed-free. Please remove any unused hay when you leave the cabin. Out of state horses must have a current Coggins test.
- Bears frequent the area; keep all food out of sight in approved containers or locked inside your vehicle, making sure to leave nothing exposed.
- Firewood at this location is for use at this cabin only. Don't Move Firewood: Help prevent the spread of tree-killing pests in our national forests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. For more information visit dontmovefirewood.org.
