What Guests Are Saying
The McCain Cabin is a clean, well-maintained, and secluded retreat that has quickly become a favorite for visitors, with plans for yearly stays. It features comfortable amenities, including full mattresses and essential kitchen appliances, making it a cozy getaway. While there were minor issues like the unfinished water pump and occasional noise from nearby shooting, the overall experience is enhanced by friendly service from the Afton Forest staff and stunning natural views.

The cabin was in good condition except for the hornet problem, which they ended up stinging one of us. There was a manual water pump with decent water for washing dishes, and the fridge was a very good, unexpected surprise. Overall pleased with the experience.

We absolutely loved staying at the McCain Cabin! It has become our new favorite place to camp, and we are planning to make it a yearly tradition........
PROS:
*Secluded space at the end of a dirt road
*Fenced in space with cabin, shed, pit toilet, fire pit, table and plenty of space
*Pit toilet is 15 yards from the cabin
*Stove and oven, fridge and freezer, propane lights, wood stove all in the cabin
*Comfortable mattresses! We were expecting little bunk bed cot pads, but they had full on mattresses.
*Table and benches inside and outside.........
HELPFUL TIPS:
*Close the door to the living area before cooking or the smoke alarm will go off
*Bring an empty water jug to fill in the creek for rinsing
*Bring a telescope - the night sky is AMAZING
*There are no trees in the immediate area, so bring a canopy during summer
*Take a truck - The roads are rough getting up there
*A neck pillow is very helpful for passengers on the drive up
*Have plenty of gas before heading up the mountain if you plan on driving to the river to fish or driving to explore
*Bring a step ladder for the top bunks
*Bring disinfecting wipes to sanitize dishes rinsed with stream water

Wonderful cabin and a beautiful setting. Easy to get to. Unfortunate that the water pump was not finished. Would have made it a five star for sure. Great stay!

The cabin is cozy, its a fun place to stay. The propane heater and stove keep the cabin really warm once warmed up. Remember to bring water or a filter in the wintertime.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. There were a few things we did not like. We had to figure out how to turn the propane on at the tank. There were some people shooting guns. The aspen trees were terrific and sounded so good when the wind blew. The views of The mountains were beautiful. Due to the gunshots we did not hike around very much. We liked the inside of the cabin. The Rangers that came around were very friendly and professional.
