About Sherman Guard Station and Bunkhouse

As the original Sherman Ranger Station built around 1929, this bunkhouse was used as a seasonal/ summer headquarters for early Forest Service management of timber and rangelands. The Sherman Guard Station and Bunkhouse is nestled in the Horse Creek drainage in a beautiful mountain setting with lots of hiking, bird watching, many verities of wild life, flowers and so much more. In the winter, Horse Creek is a saught out destination for snow machining.

I really enjoy fishing from USFS cabins and Sherman did not disappoint. The cabin is well cared for and is close to the creek for fishing. There are very limited supplies at the cabin, unlike some that have a verity of staples, so make sure to bring your own salt and pepper or anything else you may need.

We took our family of 7 for a getaway in mid-August. The weather was beautiful, and we had a blast! It was quiet and peaceful. We visited the Daniel fish hatchery, took some scenic drives nearby, including following North Horse Creek to a quiet place for target shooting, and a trip up Skyline Drive above Pinedale for breathtaking views of the Wind River Range.

Gate has a coded padlock (there is also a keyed padlock, both are situated on the chain such that opening either will allow the gate to swing open).

Cell service: AT&T - full voice/data. Verizon – no service at the cabin, full service a quarter mile east down the road.

This property has two cabins for rent: the main guard station and the bunkhouse. Both cabins have:
- Kitchen faucet and sink
- Toilet
- Bathroom sink/faucet/shower
- Screened windows that open
- Mops, buckets, brooms, and axes
- Solar electricity to run lights, charge personal electronics, and run appliances overnight
- Propane stovetop
- Old pots/pans, metal plates/cups, knives, potholders, and cooking/eating utensils
- Kitchen table with four chairs
- Lounge chair
- Wood-burning stove
- Water heater
- Trash can
- Shelves
- Four beds (two bunk bed sets) – beds do not have railings
- Propane-powered radiator w/ thermostat
- Dresser
- Bookshelves with random books/magazines/games

Main cabin also has:
- Microwave
- Coffeemaker
- Television (no service, for DVD/laptop hookup)

Running water is not potable. Advisable to boil it. Bring a filter or drinking water if you don’t want to boil it. Toilets flush; not enough water pressure to shower. Couldn't get tankless water heater to give hot water.

Other:
- Old horse corral and stable
- Fenced field with pack mules and horses
- Outdoor fire pit, picnic table, chopping stump, lots of firewood, outdoor water spigot
- Rodent traps and droppings present; no live rodents seen or heard during stay

Trip was a success, interactions with Forest Service were kind and professional. Highly recommended!

I was left literally out in the cold with nowhere to stay because the Forest Service provided me with a code for a combination lock, but I arrived and discovered the gate locked with a padlock instead, and the Forest Service could not be contacted again. I would give this 0 stars if I could.
