About Peterson Lake Cabin

Peterson Lake Cabin was built in the 1980s and named after John Peterson, who started a placer gold mine in this area in 1900. The Peterson Lake Trail that accesses the cabin follows a former tram route for the first 2 mi, and remnants of the tram can still be seen. The cabin is open year-round and is one of Juneau Ranger District's most popular backcountry rentals. This secluded retreat offers the chance to enjoy beautiful scenery and a variety of recreational activities. The site can be accessed by float plane or by hiking, snowshoeing or skiing 4.5 mi from the Peterson Lake Trailhead on Glacier Highway. The trail has an elevation gain of 800 ft. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Cabin was cute at the end of 4.3 mi trek from the trailhead. Propane heat keeps everything toasty, especially when raining outside. Did not get a chance to take the small rowboat out, but appears to be in good condition for early April

Beautiful place to visit in the winter. Had to break trail the whole way but it was worth it. The best part was when we simply rotated the timer switch for the heater and heard the faint "whump" as the propane stove immediately fired up. Gotta love it when people follow the instructions from the Forest Service and leave the pilot light on. Great log book that someone donated too. Fun to read other people's stories about their visit.

The cabin took a while to warm up at 10 degrees. Thanks to whoever brought the durlog out there. Finally helped the propane heater catch up. Otherwise a great experience!

Policies & Rules

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
