Matanuska River Park

We enjoyed this campground, especially the proximity to the playground and the availability of clean bathrooms and showers with real plumbing. We were glad the regular campsites fit our small trailer because the RV sites are very tightly packed. This is a very buggy campground, as we expected. The real annoyance was the cottonwood that blew all around, but that can be avoided by booking at a different time. It'd be nice if more of the devil's club were cut back away from the sites and trails. We would also consider using this campground for group camping if the "amphitheater" were in better condition. Noise from airplanes was only a slight nuisance and we found it more entertaining than anything.

We walked to the park and took the trail along the river to the bridge. Nice park big fields and picnic areas. The (dry) campsites would be a bit tight for our 5th wheel and the RVS were stacked up getting in through the narrow entrance. We enjoyed the trails except for the mosquitos chasing us.

The campground is just beautiful! We brought our grandkids here, ages, nine and four, and one golden retriever to spend the evening. Every campsite that we drove by was in such a nice setting, surrounded by trees and woods. Yes, the campground is in the landing pattern for small planes that are coming in to land at the airport, but we enjoyed watching them and they didn’t bother us when we were sleeping.

It's a little tight in the electric hookup area but everything else in the park is fine. There are times when the helicopters from the firebase are loud but usually for a short period.
That being said the park has great access to town. Quiet at night for sleep and closely monitored by the park personnel and Palmer PD.
Hiking trails and the bike path close by. Park and town activities most weekends.

We loved the privacy and size of the treed camp sites. They are dry sites but the comfort station with free hot showers was amazing. The only reason I’m giving 4 ⭐️ not 5 ⭐️ is because the campsite is located in line with the airport landing strip path. Small propeller planes fly directly overhead very low. We did not have reservations in late July but there were lots of avail sites.
