Very little firewood was there. What was there had been cut to long the fit in the wood stove.

About West Point Cabin
The West Point Cabin is located near the mouth of Portage Bay on Kupreanof Island. It provides a tranquil place to stay amid very scenic surroundings. The cabin also offers access to a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, fishing and boating, as well as whale-watching at Fredrick Sound.
The cabin is accessible by boat or float plane only.

The West Point Cabin is located near the mouth of Portage Bay on Kupreanof Island. It is situated west of West Point, just around the point from Fredrick Sound. It is 18 mi by float plane or 24 mi by boat from Petersburg.
The cabin can be found on USGS topographic maps Sumdum A4, Sumdum A5, Petersburg D4 and Petersburg D5. Maps are available online or by calling the Petersburg Ranger District at (907) 772-3871.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
Safety & rules
- Be aware of the remote location and safety regarding bears, water, and weather before making a reservation.
- Be cautious of hidden dangers and be prepared for extended stays because of poor weather.
- Beware of high levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) in the area.
- All trash and food must be removed from the site and packed out.

- This is the newer West Point cabin, near the mouth of Portage Bay, not the old Portage Bay cabin east of Stop Island

Vehicles & parking
- Boats must be anchored well due to strong currents and high winds; a mooring buoy is available at the cabin.
Utilities
- Water from the nearby creek must be treated before consumption.
Fires & fuel
- Firewood provided at the cabin is only for heating; outdoor campfires must use collected dead wood.
- Do not move firewood; buy it near your destination to prevent pests.
Site types & loops
- Commercial use of the cabin by outfitters or guides is prohibited.
Wildlife & food storage
- Report sightings of the invasive European Green Crab (EGC) in the area.
