Hands down our new favorite! Great spot for the kids. 3.5 mile easy walk. I don’t know how old this cabin is but it felt new and clean. Having the canoe there made this place really special. The boys had an amazing adventure in the Alaskan wilderness with that canoe while us girls painted on the beach. There are life jackets provided including one infant and one child size. We saw bear (at a lovely safe distance across the lake), moose, beavers, swan, tons of huge trout, mama loon with sooo many babies are nesting right near the dock. It was a magical experience. Cow parsnip is getting pretty overgrown but they even have tools in the shed to take care of it yourself. If any feedback it would be nice to have a few more kids life jackets but we were just happy there were any and we didn’t have to hike them in.

Great stay. Beautiful lake and mountains. Definitely canoe to the middle of the lake up view the glacier!! Saw massive bull 🫎!

At mile 52.6 of the Sterling Highway turn into Russian River Campground and travel 1 mile to Russian Lakes Trailhead, follow the Russian Lakes Trail 3.3 miles turning onto the Barber Cabin Spur trail at mile 2.5. The route is 4.2 miles in the winter and follows the campground entrance road, the summer trail for 1.8 miles, then a marked winter route and across the frozen surface of Lower Russian Lake.
Via floatplane, the cabin is 25 minutes from Seward or Cooper Landing. Refer to USGS topographic map Seward B8. Maps are available online or by calling the Seward Ranger District at 907-288-3178.
Winter travelers need to be able to evaluate avalanche and over-ice travel conditions. For current travel conditions, call the district office. Motorized access is prohibited year-round. The trail is closed to horse/pack stock from April 1 to June 30.

Barber Cabin is accessed via the Sterling Highway (US Highway 1), located at mile 52.6. The cabin is approximately 25 miles from Seward.

General
- This facility is located in an extremely remote and wild area; before making a reservation, become aware of bear, water, and weather safety (including cold)
- Recreating in Alaska can present both obvious and hidden dangers; please be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for extended stays due to occasionally poor weather
- Access is closed to all motorized vehicles
- Bears frequent the area; keep food and garbage in appropriate containers
- There is no source of fresh water near the cabin; guests must bring their own, or boil and treat water taken from lakes or streams.
- Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is not allowed
- All garbage and food must be packed out
- It is unlawful to use a public recreation cabin without a valid cabin reservation.
- Occupying a Public Recreation cabin with more than eight individuals per cabin for each permitted day is prohibited.
- Camping, pitching tents, or staying overnight within 300 feet of any public recreation use cabin is prohibited unless you have a valid cabin reservation.
- It is prohibited to hitch, tether, or hobble any saddle or pack animal including dog teams, within 200 feet of an established trail, water source, or developed recreation site, including Forest Service recreation cabins.
- Camping and/ or occupying any one Public Recreation Use Cabin for a period longer than seven consecutive days by any person or group including but not limited to family members, members of the same household, and members of the same camping party within a 30 day period, and three consecutive days May 15 to August 31.
