Wonderful cabin! We booked last minute after hearing reports of skateable ice on Skilak from end to end.
One issue: the splitting maul has a cracked handle--it probably is unsafe to use. It was also incredibly dull and chipped.

The Nurses cabin is very cozy and set up quite well for winter camping. The outhouse at the Nurses and outhouses that have been built for other Refuge cabins on Tustumena Lake are very poorly designed for wintertime use. The use of a wide metal pipe from where you sit to the pit creates so much Hor-frost that the out-house is pretty much useless. If one does take the time to scrape the frost off the seat and out of the pipe and places there butt on the seat you've got about 30 seconds until frost bite becomes an issue. The conical design of the pipe creates a blast freeze effect. What a terrible design!!!!

Snag Lake cabin was nice and warm for the night.
We shoveled around the place and left more firewood than we used.
The door is slightly out of alignment but closes up.
Great stay
