My husband and I had reservations at Potato Patch for two days…we stayed 2 hours. The ultimate reason we left early was not the campgrounds fault, it was freezing and we were tenting but that was what “broke the camels back”.
Our time there started out rough with a mildly rude interaction with a camp host when I asked if we could move camp sites due to the website not being clear about the site being for a small group. It was a horrible campsite.
She ultimately allowed for us to move but we only had a few options. We chose one that wasn’t great but it was the best option. It was too small and too close to our neighbor who was in a tent trailer.
We wanted to get a fire going but only to find out they don’t sell firewood so we tried scrounging for pinecones and wood but things were wet due to a recent rain.
As we sat down to rest after setting up camp we could hear traffic noise that was annoying, especially camping .
Pretty setting in the trees but in our opinion the sites are too close and I don’t feel the website does a good job of explaining that is at the top of Mingus Mt. , hence the very cold temps , Which for tenters is vital information.
We have decided that we are not interested in staying here in the future.
A positive would be that the restrooms were clean and close to campsites.
Oh, and I must say that when we first arrived we got mixed up and ended up in the loop with hookups…absolutely awful looking sites! Extremely close together , and just looked like a parking lot. The non hookup sites were much better looking.
My recommendation would be for them to combine some sites to make them larger.

Potato Patch Campground is beautiful. Electric at 12 sites in Loop B and all 12 sites are pull-through.

From Prescott, take U.S. Highway 89 north past Granite Dells, turn right on Hwy 89A and travel approximately 20 miles to the top of Mingus Mountain on steep, mountainous grade. Potato Patch Campground entrance will be to your left (across from the Summit Picnic Area) on Forest Road 106.
From the Verde Ranger Station in Camp Verde, travel approximately 20 miles northwest on Hwy 260 (toward Cottonwood). Turn left on Hwy 89A. Stay on Hwy 89A (watch for a second left turn), then follow the paved and winding mountain road through the town of Jerome and up to the summit on Mingus Mountain. This road is steep with tight hairpin turns and few pull-offs in Jerome or on the roadway. The turn-off to Potato Patch is on the right, across from the Summit Picnic Area.
Potato Patch Campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 89 and Highway 89A, located approximately 20 miles from both Prescott and Camp Verde.

Policies & Rules
General
- Maximum stay limit is 14 days within 30 consecutive days in Prescott National Forest including stays at dispersed sites.
- A Forest Service host is on site.
- Access is limited to a combined vehicle length of 40 ft.
- Interagency Senior and Access passes are honored for a 50% discount on overnight fees only.
- All guests without a reservation (first-come, first-served) or a second vehicle must pay with exact change using the self-pay kiosk as soon as campsite is selected.
- Pets are welcome but must be on a 6 foot leash or in a cage and never unattended.
- Quite hours are between .
- OHV/ATV use is prohibited in the campground.
- Fireworks, including sparklers, are prohibited at all times on National Forest Lands.
- Fire restrictions may be imposed due to dry conditions, at which time smoking, wood and charcoal fires may be prohibited.
- Don't Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. For more information visit dontmovefirewood.org.
