About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Through no fault of our campground, we didn’t have water or flush toilets at our campground. But NPS did a wonderful job with clean porta potties, water tanks. Thank you!

We loved meeting Blue the new conservation canine while she was on duty to tell the elk to go somewhere else. Blue and her handler are amazing and this is a definite program that needs to be continued.

Mather is perfect for catching the blue shuttle to meet up with the other shuttles. Right up the road from the campground checking.

It rained both nights and there was no water due to water restrictions but it was a lovely experience - large campsite with a good distance from other sites; some tree coverage for my tent and a good, flat base to set up on. Only had porta potties at this time so can't comment on the bathrooms. Was practically empty because of water restrictions. Went to sleep and woke up listening to elk bugling - magical!

Mather is the best campground I have ever stayed at. In spite of the no water/no fire situation, we still had a blast. This was a family campout. Not one complaint! we enjoyed the geology museum and several points along the canyon, and sunset at Mather Point. This is the 2nd time I have camped there this year with the family. It will be an annual from now on!!

Favorite campground because of access to the rim and all the animals wondering around. No water but no issue because I brought plenty and a shower was 15 minutes away at GC Camper Village down right outside of the park (so you will have to re enter). Shower was $5 cash and was a bathroom stall type with shower curtain. I brought all my food but there was a market walking distance and there is a food truck next to it (mid day) if you want something hot. Campground was only 1/2 full which was really nice. Spent 4 days and walked over 50 mi.

Campground was quiet and comfortable. Mostly empty in late September. Can walk to Market Village and the Rim. Elk roaming about was fun. Be aware when walking: the Maple Loop is the furthest one.

The maps did not show how to walk or drive to the rim of the canyon. It was unfortunate that there was no water and the toilets were locked and replaced by portable toilets, but the reasons were understandable. The rangers and volunteers were outstanding.
