About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

We love Mather! The campsites are quite spacious compared to others we’ve been at. And it’s never been too noisy. The bathrooms are also very well maintained. Mather is walking distance to the General Store and Yavapai Lodge, which is a big bonus.

We had a great time at Mather Campground! It is located centrally in the park and a few minutes drive from several key spots. The sites were clean and well-maintained. There are several bathrooms, water stations, showers, and laundry services on site.

*Note: Some sites are closer to the main road, and you can hear traffic from them.

Campsite 293 Pine Loop was perfect for tent camping. Easy spot for backing in my car, a nice flat spot to pitch the tent, and quiet neighbors. Not too close to the restroom, with its noisy hand dryer. Midway thru my visit I used the showers and laundry machines at campground services. Super convenient, but you have to rush to take a shower in 5 minutes!

For visitors with electric cars, the level 2 EV chargers at nearby Market Plaza are free. For hikers, it is very convenient to park at Lot D on Backcountry Rd, which is a 5-minute walk to the Bright Angel trailhead. After the hike you can get food and soft drinks at the Maswik lodge food court -- or pizza and beer at the Maswik pizza pub.

Campground was clean and the restrooms were pretty good. Campsite was very rocky however, it was impossible to get eight stakes in for a tent, had to use rocks to tie some points down.

Ranger Doug (Geology Talk/Guitar Playing) was amazing and Ranger Jessica was tremendously helpful. Mather Campground is wonderful as always, with the exception of the many generators in the morning and evening.
