About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Campground and campsite were totally fine. Campsite a bit small but still fit a two-person and a four-person tent comfortably. Only complaint is that this site is not far from the bathroom (maybe 100 ft); they leave the windows of the bathroom open in summer; and the electric hand dryer is just ridiculously loud. (And because of it's only-intermittent use, loud and SUDDEN.) Effectively, you time when you're going to bed against what time you expect other campers to be done using the toilets. (And can then look forward to waking up to its dulcet tones in the morning, 5:30 sharp.)

I rented this site for my parents and uncle. They easily fit a 6 person tent. We ended up using this spot for our nighttime campfire and cooking at the table.

There isn’t a lot of privacy, but it was comfortable and conveniently located to the restroom.

This was my third tent camping trip at Mather Campground. The space was flat, clean and we had room for two smaller tents. It would have fit a 10 person tent.

The sites are close to each other, so I booked site 313 and my parents and uncle stayed in that space. The sites are close to each other, but everyone was really friendly and I didn’t see anyone breaking the quiet time rules.

There is shade, and a few trees where we were able to tie a hammock to. Just make sure to take them down when you aren’t using them. The deer and elk have gotten stuck in the hammocks.

Watch your food as well. Squirrels and ravens are constantly looking for opportunities to grab a snack.

The restrooms were clean and well stocked. After primitive camping for years, a flushing toilet and sink were a welcome amenity. There are also showers and a community room near the guard shack.

Access to the canyon is about a one mile hike. I spent one morning on the rim of the canyon watching the sun rise and didn’t see a soul. We also took time to explore the cemetery and learn about some of the pioneers buried there.

If you have a bike, there are so many trails and it’s easy to get around. I highly recommend shuttle along Hermit road. The views at each stop were incredible.

My parents have some mobility issues, but there were so many accessible features for them. We love Mather, the Grand Canyon and can’t wait to come back!

Site #231 is great. It is on the end of the loop with nobody behind and good spacing from your side neighbors. We saw elk and deer in the forest in the mornings. It was really quiet and even had good cel phone service for both AT&T and Tmobile. The bathrooms are really clean and there is a sink to wash your dishes. Bathrooms are close but not too close. The check-in process could be faster but other than that, we really enjoy staying in this campground. The showers were fine also ($2.5) and felt great after a hike to Skelton Point.
