About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

I have camped at Mather Campground many times and find it to be beautiful and enjoyable. However...

The campground rules should absolutely prohibit the playing of music. As you know, the campsites are very close to each other. Too often people play music thinking that they are the only ones using the campground. It ruins the peace and tranquility of others. I see families stunned into silence because they are being exposed to unwanted music. It is very stressful and awkward to ask people to lower their music. Some people only lower their music a fraction of the volume. Asking someone to shut off their music has the potential for conflict. People travel hundreds or thousands of miles to enjoy the peace of nature. I'm begging the National Parks to prohibit the playing of any music in their campgrounds.

I understand that people need to use generators. I had the misfortune of camping near someone that had a generator that was extremely loud. There should be a limit on the decibel level of generators. If some has a loud generator they should attempt to dampen or lessen the noise.

This is a huge campground, but most of the sites are well spaced out to ensure some privacy.
This site is great. You have the option to set up tents further back as there is no site behind this one and the road is a good distance away. Plenty of trees. A bit of a walk to the bathroom, there is a cut through but it is close to sites so not respectful to use when others are camped there.

This is an amazing way to see and experience The Canyon! Clean, well thought out campsites that feel secluded and have more stars at night than you've ever seen. As always the rangers make any experience in a national park a wonderful time, and the folks working the campground were no exception!

The camping area on juniper loop is amazing with all the nature and local animals just walking through the camp. The area is always quiet when we camp there and facilities are always clean.
