About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Really nice campground. Large sites and very good preparation with conctete, wooden chips for the tent, a brand new table set and a wonderful fireplace. Elks and ravens passing by all the time.
A bit on the downside:
We were soaked for 2 days by thunderstorms. Still no campfires allowed due to "EXTREME" fire danger.
Looks like they change the fire danger status once a month only - with 3 inches of rain, their assessment was clearly outdated.
Otherwise perfect and very nice and competent staff!

Oh - one more: The campground was half empty.
Perception was that drastically less tourists from outside of the US were present. Wondering whether there is a connection between these two pieces of information. Annual park fee raised from $80 to $250 will not prevent foreigners from coming. Traveling from NP to NP they will also not be pushed back by NP and campground specific booking windows and rules. Local prices for food being 2..3x more than in major cities are no reason either to skip seeing this world wonder.
Hence I am completely in the dark trying to understand, why the visitor intterest is so low nowadays.

Spacious room between campsites—a lot of shade around. A lot of deer were curious whenever we came back. Obviously, people have been feeding them in the past. Cellular service was normal.

The campground is in the nature , we even had dears with us for breakfast.
The bus just accross the street to get to the Grand Canyon was easy to use

Spent 5 nights at Site 106. Near perfect experience.
Elk roaming around the sites munching away. Huge site with multiple tent locations. Clean bathrooms for a campground, clean running water, easy to find dumpsters for trash, super friendly park rangers when we checked in, and after check in never had to interact with them. They drove around about twice a day so they were available, but didn't need them.
Super close to the camp store and Mather point. Would stay at this site again in a heart beat.
