About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

First time ever camping at the Grand Canyon even though I'd been there nearly a dozen times for day trips. Read up on Mather campground and thought it had the amenities to make car camping more enjoyable. Found out before our trip the showers would not be operational, so that was a bit of a let down. Nothing like a cold shower after a long days hiking and viewing the canyon. None the less my 12yr old and I still enjoyed our time. Campground was clean (bathrooms included), quiet, and a wonderful place to return to after a day in the canyon. Would love to do it again next year. Thanks to all the wonderful rangers and staff who made this trip amazing for us!

I have been to this site many times and it has always been a great experience. This time, a lady with three dogs arrived the second day of my stay. They barked non stop, so I left. It may be good for the Forest Service to consider not allowing dogs.

I spent a night at Mather Campground in advance of a Rim-to-Rim loop (BA Lodge to SK to Phantom Ranch to BA Lodge; ~23 mi). The Ranger was welcoming and informative (directions, rules/regs, park map) when I checked in. My site was clean and easy to identify. The facilities were also clean and easy to access. I took advantage of the pay showers ($2.50 for 5 mins) near the entrance when I arrived, having ridden the Village Gravel 60 around Mt Humphreys earlier that day. After my hike, which I started at 4:15 am and took just under 10 hours, I used the showers again before driving home to Las Vegas. The attendants were helpful and engaging. I would definitely recommend Mather Campground for any Grand Canyon visit. It is 5 minutes by car from all the South Rim sites and there are many walking/biking trails to use as well.
