What Guests Are Saying

Mather Campground is highly praised for its cleanliness, spacious sites, and beautiful natural surroundings, making it a favorite for visitors. The campground offers convenient access to the Grand Canyon, with friendly and helpful staff enhancing the overall experience. While some guests noted issues like the distance to shower facilities and occasional noise from trash pickups, the positive aspects of wildlife encounters and peaceful atmosphere far outweigh the negatives.

There's a lot to like about the Mather Campground. Starting with the location, it is an easy bike ride to most of the facilities on the South Rim and the Mather Viewpoint, so if you bring a bicycle you can park your car for a day or two. The campground is clean, and quiet during quiet hours. We liked setting up our tent on real dirt instead of a gravel pad. During our stay, the water was off to the entire South Rim complex because a recent flash flood damaged the water intake pipe in the canyon. We heard about it in the news ahead of time and came prepared with our own water, so no issues with that. They did provided clean portable outhouses to use since the bathrooms were closed due to the water outage. Also due to the outage, since the lodges were also closed, there were no crowds. This ended up being a very good time to visit.
Aside from a noisy trash truck making the rounds at 5am on a Friday morning, we have no complaints.
Our compliments to the park staff for making a tough water situation better.

Great campsite with a lot of wildlife. At one point we had 8 Elk and 4 Mule Deer right behind our spot just hanging out and eating. There was a coyote that trotted through as well. Bathroom was close and clean

Overall it is a nice campground. Unfortunately due to fire restrictions no water was available and it made that stay more challenging. I would stay there again.

Nice clean campsites and we booked same day. Water shortage in park was not an issue.

Great site. Most secluded of the tent sites. Tree clearing above tents for good star gazing. Only 4 instead of 5 rating because of the no showers or running water during our visit.

Our site #64 was close to the restrooms which was convenient for our family, the site was level and spacious. I love that we could walk to the shuttle and see more of the park and the visitor center. We will definitely be coming back!

Although there were stage 4 water restrictions and spigots were off, the port-a-potties were clean and stocked. The campground may have been super quiet as a result, which was delightful. Love this campground and park!
