About Mather Campground
Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance.
Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery.
Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground..
The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Even though there were Stage 4 water restrictions in place during our stay, the Park did a fantastic job. Porta-potties were available throughout the campground, Grand Canyon Village and Desert View. They were clean, stocked with TP and pumped out every other day. Each bank of porta-potties had well stocked hand washing stations. Staff was helpful. Campground was wonderful, as always!

We were a family of 4 - first time traveling/camping in an RV with lots of cancellations and complications due to the severe flash flooding in the GC. Despite the closure of bathrooms and no availability of potable water, we had a wonderful stay. The rangers were extremely helpful in explaining the limitations - especially the super-friendly and helpful guy from CT who checked us in and gave us lots of tips for how to get the most out of our visit. The temporary port-a-potties and handwashing stations they had throughout the campground were pristine! In fact, they were in much better condition than the actual bathrooms in the park. We enjoyed a very special serene stay at Mather and woke up to the call of elk right outside our window every morning. Be sure to check the park maps closely - you do NOT need to navigate the main road to get from the campground to various rim points and Canyon destinations - there are very nice paved multi-use trails as well as easy to walk dirt trails that can get you from point A to B. Trip of a lifetime!

No fire, no water, but full price for the campground? Campground was only one quarter to one third full, while we were there, yet when we made reservations about 45 days before our trip, there was nothing available but one spot that had our door to the road and quite small for our trailer. Also the extreme long line to get into the canyon, no bypass for people with passes and only credit cards accepted. They said they were understaffed, the usual response when we visit there.

We stayed for three nights recently and it was a great experience. There was no running water so we brought 15 gallons of our own to get us by. They did have several portable restrooms on site and some hand washing stations which was wonderful. Our campsite had plenty of shade and was nice. The only issue we had, which we were warned about upon arriving, was the annoying ravens attacking even our jug of water. We were good about keeping all food put away but they even attacked the jug of water.

Nice visit, my first time to Grand Canyon National Park. There was a water restriction in effect but that was stated on website, furthermore I expected to be “boondockin” anyway so had my batteries charged & fresh tank full. Staff was great and area was clean.

We stayed during the time of the water restrictions. Flushing toilets would have been preferred but the portable toilets were functional. We stayed during the rutting season so we could hear the male elk bellowing at all hours of the night and early morning. I enjoyed hearing the sounds of nature. My only complaint would be the sounds of humans during the quiet hours. There was a Tesla camping next to us and we could hear their car and the show they were watching until midnite. Then there was the car alarm that went off not once but twice at around 2am. To top it off there was the dog barking incessantly somewhere between 2-4am. Nature sounds will lull me to sleep. Human sounds kept me awake.
Overall the campsite was clean. Whether you get good neighbors is really luck of the draw. I wasn’t very lucky but I would definitely try my luck again.

There are some really lovely bike trails all around the campground that are perhaps underutilized. Nicely sized spaces for camping and clean portapotties as the park try to keep things rolling with no water. Very nice rangers!

I stayed at Mather campground after my reservation at Trailer Village was cancelled due to the water emergency. Thankfully, it was a great substitute, and since my rig is fully self contained, it was not inconvenient at all that there were no facilities at Mather.
Mather is very well maintained. My drive-through campsite was level and easy to get into/out of. The paved roads in the campground were in good repair.
The rangers at the office were very helpful and pleasant. I got good information from them and used their suggestions.
I would stay at Mather again with no hesitation.

Mather Campground is located within the park in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim.
From the south entrance station: proceed for about three miles (3.1 mi) and turn left on Center Road. Travel 1/4 mi (.2.5 mi) and turn right onto Market Plaza Road. The campground is about one mile (1 mi) down Market Plaza Road on the right (Mather Campground Road).
From the east entrance station: follow the road 25 mi (24.9 mi) and turn left at the "T" intersection onto South Entrance Road. Travel about 1/2 mi (.5 mi) and turn right at the intersection onto Center Road. Travel 1/4 mi (.2.5 mi) and turn right onto Market Plaza Road. The campground is about one mile (1 mi) down Market Plaza Road on the right (Mather Campground Road). .
Highway access
Mather Campground is accessed via South Entrance Road from the south and from East Entrance Road from the east, both leading into the Grand Canyon National Park. The nearest major road is Arizona State Route 64, which connects to the South Rim area.
