About Mather Campground
Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance.
Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery.
Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground..
The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Mather Campground is nice because of the area, the trees, and of course the Grand Canyon. What you need to know that kept it from being five stars. One the generator hours, they have two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening to run a generator. I think the hours should be during the day as well, this is when everyone is out enjoying the Grand Canyon, not being at camp - so wouldn't that be better for the noise pollution at night - up to 8 PM? Some wake up early to go hiking and therefore go to bed earlier. Just a minor observation for those that might need to run one for some A/C or recharge their batteries. The camp spots are very close together, and very few are close to level. It would not take much to actually make the camp sites a little bit better - maybe extend some, but almost all I went by could use a leveling. I have been camping for 40 years, and the National campgrounds at our National Parks are worse than state run ones... I think we could do better for the amount of money we pay, not only in access fee's, but in our taxes as well.

I was camped at site 23 in Mather, an ADA site. It was in no way an ADA site as it had none of the features. There was no pad or leveled area at the picnic table or from the driveway to the picnic table. The driveway was not flush with the ground. I took pictures. The was a 6-7 inch drop from the driveway edge to the ground. There is NO WAY a wheelchair could make that transition without difficulty. It would be even harder to get back up onto the driveway from the ground.
I was a reverse site with the door entering toward the street rather than the picnic table and site. That means that the disabled person had to go out to the street and go around the trailer or RV to get to the site. The picnic table was standard and did not include an extended top to allow a person in a wheelchair to sit at the table. The driveway was very unlevel as well requiring braking or strength to maneuver up and down it in addition to the drop off at the edges.
I have camped many times in an ADA site and this is most certainly not it. Putting up a sign does not make a site ADA compatible. There are requirements. This site didn't even try. It should not be marked as ADA. If there is a requirement to offer ADA sites at NP campgrounds, then create one that meets requirements or acknowledge that there are no ADA sites at that campground.
Additionally, the site was strewn with 6-8" rocks across the area. Normally, rangers or hosts attend to removal of obstacles between campers.
In reserving that site I thought that it would comply with ADA requirements. It most certainly did not.

Our trip to the Grand Canyon was great! Mather campground was a great location for being close to everything we wanted. The shuttle bus was a short walk from our campsite and the facilities were good too. Mather Point is a great location for a scenic view of the canyon. Then walking along the rim just give more spectacular views of the canyon below!

Large campground with a small feel due to the loops and tree coverage. Walk to the bathroom was about 2 minutes. The site was spacious and plenty of distance between neighbors. I appreciated the camper services where I could shower and do laundry, but it definitely needs upgrading!

From the south entrance station: proceed for about three miles (3.1 mi) and turn left on Center Road. Travel 1/4 mi (.2.5 mi) and turn right onto Market Plaza Road. The campground is about one mile (1 mi) down Market Plaza Road on the right (Mather Campground Road).
From the east entrance station: follow the road 25 mi (24.9 mi) and turn left at the "T" intersection onto South Entrance Road. Travel about 1/2 mi (.5 mi) and turn right at the intersection onto Center Road. Travel 1/4 mi (.2.5 mi) and turn right onto Market Plaza Road. The campground is about one mile (1 mi) down Market Plaza Road on the right (Mather Campground Road). .

Mather Campground is accessed via South Entrance Road from the south and from East Entrance Road from the east, both leading into the Grand Canyon National Park. The nearest major road is Arizona State Route 64, which connects to the South Rim area.
