About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Mather was great! Clean, quiet, well marked and close to sights. We went May 13 to 15, and stayed in site 48. The shuttles are convenient, but very crowded, standing room only most of the time.
Site 48 had room for 3 large tents, had plenty of trees to hang a hammock, was pretty shaded, close to the water supply, close to the bathrooms (but not so close as to hear or smell it), in the first loop so closer to the shuttle pickup, fairly flat, not rocky and the ground was firm but able to sink tent stakes with pressure from leaning against them with my boots. Parking spot could fit one and a half of my car's length (Nissan Rogue).
Mule deer came through camp, ravens were all over the place, only saw 2 mini bears (ground squirrels), and one hawk.
I will definitely stay here again, and will try to get this site as well.

This is a great campground. It's unfortunate that it isn't more big-rig friendly. We stayed four nights in four different sites because there are only 5 that accept up to 30' rigs. We were lucky to even get those! The campground is great though - very clean, spaced out just enough to make it feel private, and access to everything at the south rim via the bus route or biking/walking paths. Be warned that it's downhill the whole way to the Village and it's uphill the whole way to the Visitor Center.

Camp site was great. Mainly quiet tent campers. Saw a deer grazing close by. Bathrooms were clean and had running water. Nice 20 minute walk to the rim. Big food store an easy walk. Just bring a camp stove and buy food there!

I always enjoy camping in Pine Loop, where generators are not allowed and so the campsites are quiet. It's nice to be able to leave the car at the campsite and use the shuttle to get everywhere. Cooking breakfast in the campsite is nice, but you can also get an early breakfast at the Maswik Cafeteria to help you get on the trail early.

The campground is clean and well-maintained, with ample space between sites to ensure privacy. Having a well-stocked general store nearby (actually a supermarket) is perhaps one of the biggest advantages of this National Park campground. However, there is one drawback: the laundry and shower facilities. With only one set of amenities available for over 300 spots, it tends to get very crowded, especially in the evenings when many guests are looking to shower.
