About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

Lovely campground, with the sites nicely spaced out and paved parking spots for your vehicle or rv. Market Plaza is less than 10 minutes by foot, and there's a shuttle bus stop right by the campground entrance if you don't want to walk. The bathrooms were kept clean and well-stocked. Fill up your water jugs before you leave because the water was cold and delicious!

The camp hosts were too big for their britches! We were with a school group unloading stuff and they came over and were very rude about us “parking” there. We explained we are just “unloading”
and are not parking there we will be going to our own site to park. Same thing when we were leaving, we were loading up stuff clearly and he was back at it complaining about to many cars. They could clearly see we were loading to leave. Also the bathroom never had soap to wash hands. It’s a nice campground and spot the ranger people are just not nice. Be careful where you park no matter what you are doing they will come complain to you!

Mather Campground was a short drive to the Visitor Center where we caught buses east or west. The showers are a bit tricky to find but are at the entrance included with the laundry facility. They were not very clean but provided hot water for $2.50 in quarters. We battled some very aggressive crows which broke into our dried fruit in our presence. Our site was very peaceful and quiet otherwise with elk passing through periodically. Bathrooms were clean and warm. We recommend the farthest western location on the bus route called Hermit's Rest where we found hot cocoa on a very chilly night. The architecture is amazing as the timeless truth and beauty of an old Psalm posted for God's glory on one of the pillars.

I think the generator run time needs to be adjusted. The early morning and late evening is when people want to be out looking at the scenery but instead we were trying to charge up our systems in the 4 hrs of daily generator time. The batteries take longer than that to charge on RV and accessories, most generators are quieter now days so I don't see the issue to run them longer during the day so everything gets fully charged. Other than that we loved the spot and scenery!

We loved this campground. The sites are small and close together, but you don't feel cramped. Easy to get around the park, shuttle even stops at the campground. We will stay here again.
