About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

We loved Mather Campground. Elk wandering around, amazing birds to spot, and of course the Grand Canyon with convenient shuttles to viewing areas. Campsites were very private and quiet.

Mather is a large campground near one of the park entrances, but with the overall layout divided into paved loops it feels smaller. With medium size trees scattered throughout, it feels fairly private. Not secluded, but comfortable. And thankfully, campers generally refrained from using noisy generators. There is, however, some tolerable road noise from the entrance highway nearby.

Depending where your actual campsite is, it is a fairly short walk to the nearby general store offering groceries and a small variety camping supplies and souvenirs. Lacking, however, is a decent network of convenient walking paths leading through the campground and over to the general store, which requires crossing campground roads and a busy general service road. I think the Park Service could do a better job of safely accommodating foot traffic.

Clean, well maintained campground. Easy check in. Nice paved internal roads and sites, each with a fire ring / grill and picnic table. Clean dump station and potable water fill area. Showers and laundry looked clean and well maintained but we didn't have to use them. Sites are adequately spaced for privacy. Public restrooms throughout the campground were clean and well maintained. Great proximity to all Grand Canyon areas. We will stay here again should we return in the future.

Was beautiful weather, unseasonably warm. It was in the mid 70s to 80 in March. The bathrooms were clean, well lit, and heated. Quietest campground we've stayed in, very peaceful. It was nice not to have loud music late into the night. Many elk around, amazing how large they are. The IMax was great. Fun time.
