About Mather Campground

Due to high demand, Mather Campground recommends reservations during peak season: March 1- November 30. You may book reservations up to 6 months in advance. Mather Campground is on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Grand Canyon is one of the most inspiring landscapes on Earth and draws over five million visitors per year to its spectacular scenery. Mather Campground is large and can accommodate a variety of needs and comfort levels. It is the only campground within Grand Canyon Village. Scenic overlooks, the park's free shuttle bus system, the Visitor Center, the general store and hiking and biking trails are all within a few miles of the campground.. The campground is at an elevation of approximately 7 ft. (2134 m). Summers are sunny with high temperatures generally in the 80s. Thunderstorms frequently occur in July, August, and early September. Fall and spring are mostly sunny and cool with occasional snow. Visitors should come prepared for changes in weather.

This is a nice campground with easy access to the park by shuttle. Clean bathrooms and easily accessible dumpsters for trash. One downside is that some sites are very small and don't allow much privacy -- the site we had appears to have been one half of a formerly larger site that had been subdivided into two, which means you are VERY close to your neighbor. The other downside is that the park is understaffed. Because of the understaffing problem, many campers were breaking rules that degraded the experiences of others -- leaving trash in sites, making loud noise late into the night, etc. The rangers we spoke to were trying their best, but there just aren't enough people to help with the crowd management asepect of the campground.

It would be great to have an option to cancel with full refund when amenities aren’t available. No water, toilet or fires aloud. I would have camped in Tusayan for cheaper. :-(

We were there for three nights, Sept 1 through 3, during the Level 4 water restrictions. We had brought potable water with us, and wet wipes for "showers." The campsite was level and easily accessible. The bathroom was about 100 yards from us. We got lost once in the dark, but had no trouble after that. The sky was so dark that the stars were like flashlights. Quiet times were observed by everyone around us. Flush toilets were fine, and cold water in the lavatories. There is a 120 V receptacle in the bathroom, so folks were plugging in their battery banks as needed. The elk came visiting our campsite, along with ravens, regularly in the morning. What a sight! We drove to the Visitor Center each day and left our car while we rode the free shuttles all day. Then back to the Mather Campground. It was beautiful weather, and we survived the water restrictions without problems. I would definitely tent camp there again.

Perfect campsite perfect weather. High of 80 each day we were there, low of about 60 or so. Perfect for sleeping.
Little to no flying bugs.
I highly recommend this specific site as it’s close to entrance and has ample parking in its parking area.

It was great, not super crowded. Was a little bummed by the lack of running water, but that was not the campsite’s fault by any means. Mother Nature likes to have her way.

Campsites were clean and spacious. I’m excited to camp here again once the water situation is back to normal!
