What Guests Are Saying

The Shaw House offers a charming getaway in the scenic Chiricahua Mountains, with excellent stargazing and hiking opportunities. Guests appreciate the cozy and rustic atmosphere, comfortable beds, and well-equipped kitchen. However, it's important to note some issues, such as limited lighting, the presence of mice, and the need for additional heating during colder nights.

Loved the cabin sad I will not return to it or the portal ccc house ...my dog is my family and I am always responsible when it comes to her. I loved the forest service for allowing my daughter to join me ...sorry for this loss

Beautiful place. Fantastic location! Kitchen apparently updated (according to the current photos). Very clean - well equipped. No evidence of rodents. A little disappointed we could not have an outside fire, but understand considering the fire risks. Wish we had had more time for a longer stay. Will rent again!

Wood locker was open and empty when we got there. No heat other than 2 electric heaters and electric stove. In January. What the heck. Mouse droppings in kitchen drawers and stove drawer. We wouldn't put any of our stuff even on the counters. Place is in dire need of heavy duty cleaning and maintenance to keep the rodents out. Previous guests had noted broken lamps and heaters and mice issues and we arrived to find the same things, in addition to no way to heat the place adequately!! I understand it is going to be rehabbed this summer, and it eeds it. The setting is gorgeous, and a good renovation on this place could make it really special. As it stands, better off spending the 8$ use fee to set up a tent up the road. I will be requesting a refund.

We recently stayed at the historic Shaw House in Cochise Stronghold, from Jan 7th through the 12th, 2023. Unfortunately, it is infested with mice. While we were there we removed three nests filled with mouse droppings and urine. Two of the nests were in one of the bedrooms. One was in a closet in an old filthy wadded up sheet and one was in a drawer full of old papers. The third nest was under the kitchen sink in a pile of plastic bags, paper and food remnants. While there, we cleaned all surfaces in the kitchen with bleach wipes but each morning there were fresh droppings. My impression of the Shaw House is that it has been severely neglected.

As you may know rodents have the potential to spread Hantavirus to humans through their feces, urine and saliva. These viruses can cause pulmonary syndrome, hemorrhagic fever, renal syndrome and death.

We recommend a thorough cleaning of the Shaw house including all cabinets, drawers and closets. Also hiring a professional pest control company to seal up openings in the house and exterminate the mice.
