White Cloud

The campground is not what we expected. The reservoir is 5 miles away and requires $14 extra for day use. The campsite we ended up at is right near the highway and we could hear every vehicle. Our site was also very close to other campers. There were bees everywhere, especially at the water spout (the hive was there). We went during the summer and it was SO hot. The nearby mountain biking trail had a lot of poison ivy too, so we did not have a good time biking. The campfire pit itself was functional, but the little oven next to it was cracked and damaged (not that we were planning to use it though...). We were so miserable that we ended up packing up and going home after it got dark.

The campsite was all messy and wasn’t clean the picnic table wasn’t in the right place and the dirt wasn’t suitable for a tent. My experience was bad at this campsite.

Bathrooms were clean, site was nice. The water was off for the lower half of the camp ground. The bees were horrible, hive in the only water faucet within walking distance from the camp. Got swarmed every time you needed to get water.

Oooof. What a disaster.
The first thing we noticed driving to our site was that, despite all the signage saying that there was a campfire and coal fire ban due to extremely high forest fire risk: more than half the sites had campfires going. The campsite next to us had a wood fire AND a coal grill going.
The next thing we noticed was the thick cloud of dust that kicked up with the slightest movement. I think some pine needle mulch might help cut back on this.
The swarms of wasp/hornets were also hard to miss. Cooking something? Dive-bombing hornets. Eating something? More hornets. Using the filthy pit toilets? Swarms of hornets (I had to bribe my kids with a promise of 50$ for every sting to get them to use the toilets). Trying to get water from the one spigot that works? Hornets bubbling up out of the earth to swarm you.
We never saw the camp host: they didn't put a stop to the campfire situation, they didn't ask people to stop playing loud music and partying (that went on until 1am), and apparently they didn't clean the pit toilet shelters.
There were also a lot of off-leash dogs.
After less than 24 hours at this site we decided to leave early and will not be coming back.

Good campground. Most spots look to have good space and tree coverage. Space 14 itself was more exposed as it looks like recent tree clearing has opened it up a bit. And it's adjacent to the bathroom so you get a draft of that specialness from time to time. Site has a bear box and fire pit with grill. Toilets were clean and well maintained. Overall the entire campground it pretty darn dusty. Oh, and The Wheelhouse restaurant is about 10 mins down the road as well as a small market for emergencies.

We had a little issue with the camp host. We had space 14 and 13 reserved Friday-Sunday as we had 7 people. We mainly centered our camp around space 13 because it had more shade. We camped Friday night and then on Saturday went to a swimming spot on the Yuba. When we got back there was a trailer in our spot with a truck and separate car and the generator blasting. Turns out camp host had not really done their job when these folks came in. She told them they could take and empty spot because it meant that the campers did not show up for their reservation. Our camp looked sort of empty since we had our stuff combined with 13 so the folks took our spot. But our tent was technically in the campsite. Camp host should have known who was in the campgrounds in the morning and should clearly not have allowed them in our spot. They corrected it and the trailer was moved to another open spot. But ultimately, the hour of confusion and hassle could have been avoided if they were on top of which guests didn't show for their reservations. Oh, and there was a very loud party until about midnight on Saturday right across from the camp host. They were not really quiet until 1am. But when I camp, I'm tired and am usually ready for bed, thanks to some campfire drinks, and sleep heavily so it didn't bother me or my kids really either. Still, host should have quieted them down. But I bet they probably didn't get complaints so they just let it roll. We didn't complain.

Space 13 is well shaded with good space between neighbors and has a bear box, fire pit with grill, and one of those weird old ovens. Dusty area for sure but great location to launch to Yuba River swimming holes, nearby lakes, and some good mountain biking. Most of the spaces at the campground appear to have good shade. You can hear noise from the highway and in the middle of the night is can sound pretty loud but not a real hassle. We dealt with it fine. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Potable water is very close to space 13. You do get a good bit of mosquito action as well as some yellow jackets on your food in the morning. But no one got stung. You might just have to move around while you eat breakfast. Hey, it's the outdoors. You're always going to have bugs. Space 13 backs up to a fire road that leads to some other trails. Nearby fire station uses the path for their morning runs. Oh, camp host did not have firewood or ice but you can get both at a market about 10 mins towards Nevada City. Market has your basics plus a sandwich counter if you want to grab lunch.
