What Guests Are Saying

Hirz Bay offers beautiful campsites with stunning views, easy access to the lake, and well-maintained facilities during the off-season. Many guests appreciate the spaciousness of the sites and the presence of water spouts and trash cans. However, issues such as noise from nearby campers, overflowing trash, and inadequate bathroom maintenance were commonly noted, particularly during busy weekends.

We camped at Hirz Bay for Memorial Day weekend as we have for the last several years. The campsites are fairly spread out, most have views of the lake. Beautiful place to camp. Fairly easy access to the water and the boat launch is a very short drive.
For this year though, by Friday, all of the flush toilets were clogged. There is a dump style toilet down by the parking lot by the lake but it is far from all the campsites. Also at those ones only the mens locked, the women’s would not. Even the water stations seemed to be slow draining. It seems that somebody was coming and clearing them midday, but by evening or the next morning they were clogged again.

Also there doesn’t seem to be an onsite host from what we could tell. Saturday there was a campsite up until 2 in the morning shouting back and far across the campsite and in the road. There was nobody around to enforce any sort of quiet time.

Also some of the bear boxes need to be repaired. From past experience and encounters bears are very active in this area and the bear boxes should all be operational.

Campground had no service. They did not have anyone to take care of trash that was overflowing. The site itself was okay. Wouldn't stay again.

It's a nice campsite and the frequent water spouts and trash cans made it even better. There's little to no cell service so be careful. Also it's like at least 20 minutes from any major road or the freeway so it's kind of annoying to keep making that drive if you're planning to go hiking everyday. Depending where you are you'll also see a lot of deer pass by your campsite.

If you are a large group who wants to yell all night and leave trash wherever you want without consequence, this is the site for you. If you like to respect wildlife and practice leave no trace principals, then you would be miserable here. My first night I arrived there were bags of trash piled up at both trash cans near my site, all of which had been torn open by wildlife. It was so bad that I went and picked up all the trash and stashed the bags into unoccupied sites’ bear boxes since the trash itself was over flowing. There is no host on site for campground of 50ish sites, so it’s honestly just a mess. I have camped at dozens and dozens of sites booked through recreation.gov and have never abandoned a site until I stayed here.

The campground is decent however no one comes daily or even every other day to clean and stock bathrooms or take out the trash. I was there over a holiday weekend and according to the cleaning checklist, they came the day before we arrived and didn’t come again for 3 more days. During that time, the woman’s restroom had been out of toilet paper and the light never worked and there was never any soap. Based on what some of the men were saying, all they did was stock toilet paper since the toilet in the men’s room was clogged the entire long weekend (4 days) and it was clearly not cleaned. There are also no dumpsters on the entire campground, so the trash cans throughout the campground were always overflowing. I did see/hear several campers complaining about getting a parking ticket, so clearly they had time to come write tickets but not clean the bathrooms or take trash out. The cost for the sites was not worth the experience considering there are other campgrounds that get cleaned and checked daily, have showers, dumpsters, etc. for the same price. Maybe it’s nicer on a non-holiday weekend.

Stayed in site#39. For the most part my stay was great, but the only real issue I had was the bear box not locking. A bear came through my camp around 12 am and took some items. Hopefully they get the lock fixed, otherwise it was a great place to stay and hope to be back again some time.

Good campsite but trash was in our campfire ring when we arrived. There were two clogged toilets in the men's rooms for several days and some loose trash in a few campsite. Check the lake conditions before you go. This was simply Mother Nature but lake was full of algae so we skipped kayaking with our dog.
